A freecoaster hub is different to a normal hub in that normal hubs use a ratchet to be able to freewheel forwards, whereas freecoasters use a sort of screwing mechanism to engage, meaning when the driver isn't moving the clutch is disengaged from the shell of the hub, so the hub shell (and therefore wheel) is free to spin both ways with much less friction than normal.

Simple version: Freecoasters mean your wheel can turn backwards as well as forwards, and are also smoother.

freecoasters use a special clutch system so that u can ride fakie without having to pedal backwards. some people think its easier to ride fakie that way but if u are used to pedaling backwards i wouldnt reccommend a freecoaster.
