Seems like they are all pretty close to the same construction/design. Protection ratings that I've found look pretty vague. Is there any brand that stands head and sholders above the rest?

I know there are a lot out there that think helmets are irritating. I'd rather not take the risk of me or my son living out our days paralized or worse.

Thanks,

For general cycling, I've always bought helmets made by MET. If you're meaning BMX style ones, I don't know of any specific brands that make good ones, but to my knowledge - from working in 3 bike shops - helmets aren't things you pay for a brand name with. The more you spend, the better it will be, especially when you get into the higher price bracket.

Also, with helmets, a main concern is comfort - since you should take only one serious impact before replacing, which happens for a fraction of a second, with the rest of the lifetime of the helmet the only concern you have of it is comfort. I'm not saying comprimise protection for comfort, I'm saying you should shop around with similar quality models to see which ones fit you the best.

All helmets are required to meet minimum standards set forth by Washington.  So there will always be a basic level of protection there, a higher price does not insure a higher level of safety.  Meaning more often than not, you're paying for a brand name or special comfort features when you pay a higher price rather than a higher level of safety.
