Seems like they are all pretty close to the same construction/design. Protection ratings that I've found look pretty vague. Is there any brand that stands head and sholders above the rest? I know there are a lot out there that think helmets are irritating. I'd rather not take the risk of me or my son living out our days paralized or worse. Thanks, Slugger

For general cycling, I've always bought helmets made by MET. If you're meaning BMX style ones, I don't know of any specific brands that make good ones, but to my knowledge - from working in 3 bike shops - helmets aren't things you pay for a brand name with. The more you spend, the better it will be, especially when you get into the higher price bracket.

It seems like the most common brand is http://www.pro-tec.net/ - Nick Busey

All helmets are required to meet minimum standards set forth by Washington. So there will always be a basic level of protection there, a higher price does not insure a higher level of safety. Meaning more often than not, you're paying for a brand name or special comfort features when you pay a higher price rather than a higher level of safety.
