Howdy,
First post in the forum. I am Jason and i have been skating for about 5 years. Recently I moved to Washington State and have seen quit a few BMX'ers out on the street and have been very interested in trying it out. I ended up purchasing a MirraCo Blackpearl. Was a good price and the guy at the shop assured me it would hold up through my learning process..
First I want to give props to all you guys who are amazing at this sport... I have tried MANY crazy things on my skateboard many many times and have never taken spills like i have on my bike in the past couple days trying the most simple things. So props to you. I am not one to give up and i am not scared to take a dive but i could use some pointers on some basic tricks to practice and such. I just can't seem to get the MOTION/FLOW of the basic tricks.. I have been trying 180's, Bar spins (on the ground of course). i can bunny hop pretty easily but not near as high as i see some others.. not sure how they do it.... BMX'ers (around here atleast) are not near as friendly as skaters.. And nothing is more upsetting than eating crap trying over and over again and having a group of people stand there and give you the shit this guy sucks i hope he leaves and gets out of our way look.. No one seems to ever want to offer advice or even looks approachable.. guess I am on my own..
Anyways any pointers or any direction you can point me in to get some tips would be great..

I had a three paragraph reply drafted to this, I just hadn't gotten the chance to post it yet. However, I think your second post may illustrate why no one is willing to help you.
No one owes you a damn thing, no one is under any obligation to help you in any way. If they do, it is because that person happens to be especially nice. When most people are riding, myself included, it is a few precious hours we get, that may be the only shot we have to ride all week. Most riders' first priority isn't to help people learn how to bunny hop.
I'm not saying this to 'scold' you or anything, you just may need to change your attitude about how you go about asking for help.
That said, I personally really enjoy helping people to learn, and am more than happy to do nothing but that. However I know I'm definitely not the norm in this department. I've been in your situation where you feel like no one wants to help you and it's no fun. There are however, lots of things you can do to increase your chances of getting some advice.
First off, if you people are giving you looks like they want you to get out of their way, then get out of their way. The last thing you want to do is piss anybody off. Especially if you're not that good and falling a lot, space your runs out. Watch everyone else and learn from them. Take one run for every two everyone else takes, and everyone will love you.
Secondly, just because people are unapproachable, doesn't mean they are. Hang out, ride, and follow the rules for a while, and just ask someone. I think you'll be surprised at how many people are actually willing to help you out, as long as you are very respectful, and more importantly grateful. Maybe flatter them a bit, compliment the tricks they're doing, and ask them how you can learn to do it too. The most important thing to do though, is ask. People will rarely offer advice on their own unless they know you.
Third off, you're on a fantastic resource right now for riding tips. Use the search box on the right and find out if someone has already asked how to do some trick you want to do. If not, post a new question and ask. I know I for one will be more than glad to answer, as will many of our other members.
And finally, welcome to Pedal BMX, and welcome to the sport of bike stunt. :) - Nick Busey |
