MTB or 20"?
A good MTB bike for cheap money is the KHS DJ100 hard tail. Heavy, but bullet-proof. Lots of potential with this bike.
A good 20" is any bike at your local bike shop. As long as it's made out of chromoly 4130 you won't be breaking it anytime soon. Almost all 20" bikes are compatible as far as parts go.
Mostly focus on building trails and improving. Theres no worse feeling then having a $500 bike and no experience.

talk to me if you need a sig.
