spacers under stem?

right now i have about 5-6 spacers under the stem. im thinking about cutting the steerer tube and take out some spacers. what differences would i feel if any? | |

i've cut my kores down like an inch. I put a spacer between the headset and gyro plate(this gives me more pull for the back brakes, works excellent) and a spacer between the gyro plate and stem, and a thick one on top of the stem(FF gold set). So, its a little lower, but i like the feel. Lower center gravity. I'm a short rider too, though. And its a GT Show set up.
If you cut the tube, use a good pipe cutter.It'll give a straighter cut. You'll probably have to grind the top edge of the tube too. (just a little) The pipe cutter might cause the cut edge to spread and you'll have trouble getting your stem over it. Just measure real good how much you want to cut.  | |

You could always just put your stem on with the spacers on top, tighten everything down, then remove the compression bolt and take the spacers off. Or just leave them on. Either way, no one ever said they need to go under the stem.  | |

thanks for the fast replies. and that sounds like a good idea put the spacers above the stem try it out and see if i like it. i never thought of that | |

i used to ride 0 offset forks cut down as much as a could do - low bars narrow and cut down, and now i am riding the oppisit of that running pitchforks w/ a crap load of spacers- just enough for my stem to fit on thier good(shadow top load) but anyways there is some advantages for doing this(and being 5-6) is that my backwheel tricks seem so much easier- and i dont have alot of back pain

Really Tim? So you have your bars stacked? (taller set up)? Kind of thing? When i had a low set up, i felt it was smoother all around for me(5'6" as well). I'm trying to set up a second bike for low now, just need a freecoaster. Rear ends are so short now that free wheels can seem unforgiving. Though i would have so loved these short frames back in the early 90's.

well if you would like i as well run a full offset stem , and a set of pitchforks- on a twenty celeste- it works so well for me , and if you think about it , if you are doing any backwheel tricks ( eg:megaspins), it puts the bars a bit higher so you dont have to stretch as much. hope this helps tim how can you have an economy w/ nothing to loose? | |

extra height on the stem and handlebars eases off upper-back stress and will also make backwheel tricks easier (as mentioned above) the downside to it is that riding street is going to be more difficult, especially manuals. | |
