What do I use for handlebar shims?

| I'm fixing up my 9 year old cousin's Wal-Mart bike with some of my old parts. I'm trying to put my Low Drag 3's on his bike, but his "stem" thing is too big. It's the kind that you have to pry open for the handlebars to fit, and then clamp it shut with the bolt. But it is too big for these bars. So what can I use for a shim? Would bike tube rubber all the way around help? | |

| I used cut up beer cans back in the day, they always seemed to start coming out the side tough. Try wrapping your bars with electrical tape or duct tape until you get it to where the lever will grip the bar right. Old tubes might work... | |

I'm talking about the bars slipping in the stem. The brake lever will work fine because it is mine also. I tried some plastic shimmy type stuff but it didn't work. I think I'll just fix up his other bike... | |

| Lever or stem, should work the same. As long as you make the shim nice and fat and clamp down really tight. (that sounded dirty) | |

Well the handlebars are under a lot more stress than levers. | |
