Anyone surprised as I am with some of the results so far? Or am I the only one who follows these games? I go crazy every time the World Cup rolls around.
I just finished watching Tunisia v. Saudi Arabia. How crazy is a goal by SA in the 86th minute to put them up 2-1, just to have Tunisia score in the 93rd minute to tie it up. Crazy. Thanks to that game I didn't study for my marketing exam for tonight but I think it was worth it.
Anyone else following these games as closely as I am?

Dude I just finished watching Germany v Poland.  Fucking great game, 0 - 0, untill the 92nd minute, 15 seconds before end time and Germany gets one in with a beautiful centering pass from the side and a great jumping sliding kick into the goal.  I've never seen a team so dispared by a loss before, supposedly in the history of World Cup soccer, Poland has never once beaten Germany, or tied, both teams played their hearts out.

I'm pulling for America and England, although I do enjoy watching all the games.

Soccer has no history, that is because the sport is called football.

Its funny, the reporter covering the 'World Series of soccer' (his words, not mine!) for ABC was actually asked to go home by the US team because he kept referring to goals as 'homeruns' and referred to attack and defense as 'offence' and 'defense'. He made them look really ignorant about the game that is FOOTBALL so they told him to f
 - ck off and go home! They struggled against the Czech Republic and their two best players, Landon Donovan and DeMarcus Beesley spent more time defending than supplying ammunition to McBride. England vs Trinidad and Tobago this afternoon so I must dash and make it to the pub in time!  :-D

I think the problem is that even though the sport of football (not american football) is larger on a worldwide basis and has a much deeper history in regards to creation and naming of the game.
I think that in the USA the word "football" is either patented or trade marked by the "us american football body" ... or somebody saw a good opertunity to "rebrand it" and market it with better finacle sucess.

I think its great that the USA team has been able to qualify for the world cup, and i think the coach was exelent when he answered questions about the tactics for the next game ... he was open and had a good laugh ... we need more of this in football, as its a little bit to serious (IMHO) at the moment.

The only TV show that I dislike during the worldcup is CNN.
I dont mind US tv shows not having fully knowledgable reporters, since football is not a huge sport in the USA yet.
But CNN has reporters from all over the world and claims to be a world news network - yet the reporters are generally expected to refer to the sport as "soccer" even to regions outside the usa (regional programming).

Anyway enough of the dumb word soccer ........

I am enjoying most of the games (appart from the 0-0 result games)
I just wished Japan had not been beaten ... they played so well and tried so hard against those Australians.

I think a problem is people hang on the name Soccer and Football.  Whatever its called its still the same game.  They should just let the naming convention problem go, and just learn to love it.

Almost half the announcers are people from ESPN who commentate american football and baseball. The finals is going to suck, Its a NBA and a Baseball commentator. Ill be watching it with the TV on mute and maybe try and get some commentary from streamed from somewhere else.

What are those the anouncers on ABC?  I always seem to catch it when its playing on Espn, Espn2, or EspnClassic.  The announcer I get is this one older guy from england, and a former Brazil national team player doing color.
