Just wondering-
Compared to other countries and regions, like Europe or Japan, flatland is not as valuable or exciting to the general BMX community in the United States.
Iīm not saying anything against US riders or scenes. But in terms of exposure and the companies involment ($), the US looks far beyond Europe and Japan.
Why does the general public in the US cannot appreciate a pedal hang five as much as a backflip? It seems that public from other parts of the world do.
Is it a matter of "national character"?
Please post your opinions.
And remember, this is just my impression, Iīm not stating this as a fact.

it's from all the saturation in the public eye that the national media has 'portrayed' our sport as. It's sunken in soo deep that no one really cares for it except as a "fasion statement".

they never cover flatland on liveTV here, and the last flatland ive seen on major brand clothing... well... im still waiting to see that.

no average "extreme sports fan" here has ever heard of a "hang-5"

Alot of America's favorite sports pastimes have become watching instead of participating. What I mean by that is alot of Americans would rather have eye candy than brain candy...

I would definitely like to attribute that to the X-Games. Especially here in LA, it's hard to really impress anyone anymore. With the X-Games in town once a year, people are exposed to that and they see the cool backflips and big airs. And they expect nothing less!

To them, flatland is like a circus act. They just don't get it...unfortunately. Heck, even the little kids are hard to impress. Once in a while, you do find a kid who does the "ooohs" and "aaahs"...but the first thing out of his mouth is..."How high can you bunny hop?" Or, "Can you do a backflip?" UGH! All the while, you're busting your ass trying to do a Timemachine...LOL!

Oh well, as much as I like to do tricks in front of people...I just ride for myself now anyway. So whether or not they appreciate it, they will never understand the heart and dedication we put into our riding.

The x games are televised world wide. Thereīs even regional X-games...asian x-games, latin american x-games.
I donīt think thatīs the reason if people from all over the globe are exposed to the same media show. That does not apply exclusively to the USA.

Because doing some insanely creative balance trick is too much for the average americans brain to process. So the majority of these people resort to shouting out to us, "grind something! Yeeehah! I sure do like that feller that rides fer Slim Jim! Dave wuts his name? I got a brother named Dave, but he works at the auto parts store. Wut, you can't do backflips? You fuckin fairy."
Or something of that sort.

most americans let the media tell them what they find interesting. it is reflected in almost every aspect of their lives: what food to eat, what car to drive, what clothes to wear, etc. since flatland is not part of the mainstream media, there is little/no interest in the sport. fortunately, there is a small percentage of us who can still think for ourselves.

Let me clear up a misconception about Japan, a lot of people think that they get mad respect over there, but most people don't give a shit.

I used to ride at a train station, and most people would just ignore me/us riding there. They'd just walk by, sometimes right through your riding plane. Granted, its a train station but by all means annoying. The popo would come by once in a while, but they didn't force us to leave or anything. I remember one night when the cops came and accused us of being a gang, it was hilarious. Where is this mad respect at? The only real exposure or hype that flatland got was at KOG. It's just the atmosphere of having the announcer yelling and getting the crowd rowdy along with the fast paced vibe. I think the main reason that KOG is always held in large venues is because it brings in a lot of cash.

In novice there were about 75 riders, at about 2500yen ($25) a piece, thats about $1875, and thats only one class! If Canada/USA was as densly populated, with good forms of transportation, as Japan, we too could have good vibes. Thats what its all about.

We, as a community, should just migrate to one specific region of the continent and represent.

Thats my story.
