i just read some replies on our dyi web, there was quite a sparking argument between promoter of "The Donots" concert and other dyi musician, as he was opposing him how come a band like this which is sponsored by a major label like Sony/BMG can be connected with their web (www.czechcore.cz) by putting logos on posters... well the discussion was quite a long and i found quite a nice explanation of what the person thinks of the true meaning of punk/hc music generally.. i think it's said quite well and i thought i could share it with ya... it's a translation>
Maybe it might sound pathetic but you might understand me. And reject it just by saying it's how things develop and things like DIY had a sense 30 years ago and today it doesn't matter... well i just can't accept it and i don't know how to accept it. Creating your own scene, whose essence isn't money-making (apart from the large number of bands you promote) but culture which is made by people for having their own grounds to express themselves without needing major labels, agencies, sponsors... i think that's what really punk is about. And only punk like this can be taken seriously nevermind how untolerant this may sound. Disclaimer: This is a personal opinion! I know i get posts like "Well you're not saying anything new" and such... but think, how many bands that follow these ideals do you know/listen (local bands included)? Just express your opinions. http://www.bmxboard.wz.cz/templates/subSilver/images/logo_phpBB.gif | |

it's very true. "punk" isn't a music genre, it's a lifestyle.

I wouldn't necessarily say a band is supporting major corporations if they sign with a big label. Signing with a big label doesn't equal selling out.

I agree. Punk sucks. If anyone even joins a band, they're a sellout because they're just trying to get fame and spread a message.

I agree. Punk sucks. If anyone even joins a band, they're a sellout because they're just trying to get fame and spread a message. ...Or, people play music for the fun of it. Not everyone thinks just about making lots of dough and being on the cover of rolling stone. Now punk is a genre I perfer to listen to, but still people in punk bands, or any band for that matter, 95 percent of the time are in it for the love of music. Would you turn down a record deal or a gig at a major venue? I think not. If you can make a living doing something you love "i.e. playing music", then why not? I'm in a band (experimental folk jam band) currently and I'd love to one day be "famous" and expose our music to millions of loving fans, there isn't a feeling like it. Sigh. Yeah... I am in a band, and we have no intentions on ever "going big". We play at local venues, and jam around, but I don't think any of us are in it because we plan to make it big.
