The new issue of Ride Uk has a little mention in the news section that Profile are working on an aluminum hub shell with steel press-ins to take Nankai guts.

Anybody with any info they can give?

Also, Pat mentioned something about Standard making a ti shell. That'd kick ass.

making an alloy/aluminum shell seems quite pointless and border line retarded. why give up solid performance for a minute amount of lost weight and decreased life span? who expects aluminum flanges to outlast chromoly flanges of equal or lesser thickness? if an improved chromoly shell can be produced at a reasonable cost, then shit go for it. otherwise it only seems like a cash grab. profile should just put forth the effort to design an entire well built freecoaster hub.

I hope that you are not an engineer at all. First off, it makes alot of sense. If you have ever felt a nankai hub, they about 1.5 pounds. That is alt for just a hub. Now I on the other hand think that it is worth it. I for instance, would not be looking to lower the overall weight of my bike, but maybe I could lower the overall weight so I could put a stronger part somewhere else on the bike where I need it. Three years ago I bought some titanium spokes for my bike. THey were $350 dollars back then, and many would say that it was a dumb purchase. However, I have to say that since I was cracking Quamen frames left and right, and was used to 28lb bike at the time, the titanium spokes and some other lighter parts were my answer to help keep the weight the same while getting a stronger, and heavier frame. My bike is 28 lbs which is not the lightest but it is definitly not heavy and I ride a sick child frame (6lbs) and some odyssey hazard rims. NOt the lites, the original triple wall rims. So next time you think that a "minute" amount of weight is not worth it, maybe you should think about the purpose instead of the face value. I for one am working on an aluminum nankai hubshell with a titanium sleeve inside to provide positive and FAID FREE clutch engagement that parrallels the origanal nankai. Will it cost alot, of course, but considering the rear end is the heaviest part on most peoples bikes and since most people do alot of front wheel tricks, a little bit of weightloss and a better weight distribution may be a good thing.

Think of purpose.

I dunno man.....after having a Nankai for almost 4 years now......its outlasted any other part on my bike......except my sprocket. Aluminum? No thanks, I'll stick with chromoly. Profile is cool and all, but I mean shit....they couldnt even get a 9t driver right for the Nankai.

fuckin' eh joe! Nankai hubs are built the way they are for a reason. that reason being to perform consistantly no matter what. thats their purpose, and a good one at that. mr.silva makes a good argument, but i sure as shit don't think his aluminum nankai is going to last 4 years.

Royce racing and ADA makes titanium hubs....they are roadbike hubs but hey..they're hubs.

And hey...there is nothing wrong with an aluminium hubshell. If it's gonna have a steel insert for where the clutch engages and steel bearing races and everything stays where it's suposed to be there wont be a problem....unless you design it wrong ofcourse but. 99% of all high end hubs in the world are have aluminum hubshells and ALOT of them lest 4 years and longer...
