my brakes feel mushy, even with my spoke straddle mod (see photo). my old frame had a seat tube hole and the straddle was set up behind the seat tube and it was a lot easier to get my brakes working that way. i am thinking about drilling a hole in my seat tube and running my cable through it to put a straddle behind the seat tube. should i use the cable stop on the downtube and run just the inner wire through the hole (see illustration), or should i put a barrel adjuster in the seat tube hole and run the cable right to the seat tube. (i have a lock with a nylon insert on a barrel adjuster, so i dont have to worry about it rattling loose.)

current set-up:

proposed mod:

cable housing stops at down tube cable stop and inner wire goes through seat tube to a short wire straddle behind the seat tube.

which would give me more power: stopping the cable housing at the seat tube or at that cable stop?

mushy brakes might be due to a stretched inner wire.

go to a good bike shop and buy a shimano XTR stainless inner wire.

try that before drilling your frame.

about how much should that xtr wire cost? if it doesnt cost much more than a regular wire, i might do that.

Some bikes like the HOffman´s have that mod.

actually, its not much of a "mod." originally, all frames with 990 mounts had holes in the seat tubes like what i want to do. routing the straddle cable AROUND the seat tube is a relatively recent thing. a lot of folks are going back to the old way.

use the normal housing you have...

the inner wire cost about $8 and is more than worth it.
