Pedal Pickers and other random oldschool questions. posted on 2007-05-18 02:05:24

Heyas

So I wanted to revisit my childhood and rock some Cherry Pickers, but with the back breaks where they are now, its pretty much impossible.  So next best thing I guess is Pedal Pickers. Problem is, I never seen someone do one live and the only videos online I have seen are not really clear on how they are getting into that position. Any of you oldschoolers have tips?

While we are speaking oldschool, question about Miami Hop Hops. Can todays rims take that abuse (not that they could back then, in fact, they definitely couldn't, which is why I never bothered learning them). How were no handed ones done? What made the handlebars stay in the position they needed to be?

What the hell, one more. Older videos you see dudes pogoing on forkstands and having the frame revolve around them and them stepping over it as it comes around. Looks really fluid and smooth. I've attempted to learn that trick on my DK signal, and while I can pogo great on the front pegs, I can't get the frame to swing around in that slow fluid movement. I am wondering whether it is because I am using pegs now instead of the higher up forkstands. Would that have mattered?

Thanks!

"Do you Remember" video? posted on 2007-02-19 17:18:04

  Hey Guys,

A while back someone posted a video called "Do you Remember" which contained a lot of old clips from the 80s and early 90s, including someone doing a double rolaid. I cannot seem to find the link. Anyone have it handy? (btw, is this server powered by 2 hamsters? so horrendously slow and patchy).

You're the one from TN, not me. That's your redneck style.

Old school bikes in current environment? posted on 2006-11-01 21:57:53

Heya guys, I just got back into BMX and bought a DK Signal. My primary interest is Flatland. However, there are a number of skateparks around and the only other person I know that rides, only does street. Everytime I leave the ground on my DK, I think something is going to blow up. I can't do crap on it and don't feel comfortable with it. Its just to light and.... fragile.

So, I need another bike for my Street/park when I am not practicing flatland. What I would like to do is get a 87-89 era GT Performer or Dyno (Compe or Detour) and use that as my park/street bike. Is this wise? I don't plan on doing any 8 foot drops or anything, but I am not sure how well those mag axles hold up with grinding and stuff.

Any of you riding oldschool bikes (especially GTs)? What should I be aware of and what are my limitations going to be? Thanks!

Was able to get out for a couple hours tonight....

Been practicing a bunch of small stuff still. I can only get out for a few hours 2-4 times a week, so progress is so slow. Also, as I mentioned, I don't know anyone else that does flatland, so having to teach myself everything from videos/text. Sometimes its so discouraging, but I am hanging in there. Here is a roundup of what I have been doing...

Tailwhip - While I can't do these every single time, I am pretty comfortable with them. I got the technique down. Its just working on consistancy.

Surfing - I know this is goofy, but I always wanted to do these instead of the 80s style framestands. I have been able to stand up straight a few times and coast for 50-70 feet. I don't practice them every sesssion, but every now and then will try 1 or 2.

Pogos - Peg pogos can do indefinitely on front and back wheels. Back wheel can even do one handed pogo non-stop. Back wheel pedal pogos are also no problem. Front wheel pedal pogos having some trouble. Can bounce like 3-4 times, but hard getting past that.

Peg Wheelies - I did my best one tonight on the way home from my spot. I see improvement every session, but still a little confused on how high the front wheel should be. Sometimes it seems I do well with the front wheel like a foot off the ground, othertimes its like 2 and a half feet.

Boomerangs - I am holding both breaks the entire time. Something tells me this isn't right. I can spin around, but at the end, I just have no momentum and it looks clunky as hell. I have hit a wall with these. I pretty much do the same thing every time. I don't dare try without the front break because I know I will break my head.

Fork Glide - These are 50/50. On the Ground Rules video Wil says that they are easiest in a circle. I don't see it. I whip around, little over a 180, give a scuff, and I am straight rolling backwards. I practice these a bit. Wish I could see them in person.

Fire Hydrant - I see how these are done, just my balance is off and usually not in a position to get the frame to smoothly swing around. Not to worried about it because haven't put much practice into them was trying to get Fork GLides down first.

And finally--- Squeakers! - This is what I have practiced almost exclusively the last two sessions. I have seen some improvement, but not much. Half the time, I am unbalanced right in the beginning and can't even get a scuff in. WHen I am balanced, sometimes I can get 1-2 scuffs. Once 3, but I don't like the way I am doing them. I have the bars turned slightly so my foot doesn't hit the frame while scuffing, but it seems like I don't have the frame high enough, but when its high, like against my butt, the tiniest scuff overbalances me over the bars.

So.. Thats where I'm at. Comments are welcome as always.
