It's hard to say who I think the top ten are because I'm outta the loop, never seeing videos of European or Asian riders. If you want riders who were technical, if you want riders who were influential or you want riders who seemed to master the bike there would be different lists.
There are a few guys who meet all the criteria in my opinion:
Kevin, Chase, Scott Powell, Trevor Meyer, Mike Steingrabber, Chad DeGroot.
These choices come not from video but from riding with them and actually seeing what they are capable of doing. These guys can do all of the old stuff and the new stuff. That makes a big difference in my eyes.
Of course there are other guys I admire but those five easily jumped out at me.

I think it was his middle finger that put him over the top!!!

I tell them "You ever see people do tricks on bmx bikes on TV like in commercials or the X Games?" That works for me.

About 5 years ago I gave Kevin 4 Tube Stakes to take to the anodizer. he never did and now he is running them. Chisler...
Kev said he wants a mid BB but we'll see.
Oh, by the way, Kevin still rides more than nearly every person on this forum.

rifraf- I don't hate all the b-boy stuff. I totally respect the dancing, music and art. I don't respect the "i'm better than you" attitudes, the bling bling, the label promotion in clothing, the expensive cars when you are on food stamps, grills etc. Materialism is bad and the culture is swamped in materialism.
That's the bullshit I have no time for.

Therifraf- I know exactly about B-boying, having witnessed battles back in the day. I'm totally serious that it's bullshit. I knew the cardboard lords.

Hell, I'm not a big fan of many organized religions either (i.e. the institutions), but inciting hatred is never a useful solution. Thanks for hi-jacking my thread post terrorist :-P
Where did the humour and sarcasm go? This thread was to lighten spirits not to infuriate them.

Re: attitudes towards old school posted on 2006-09-23 04:59:03
At the last couple of york jams there have been a couple 88 masters, early 80's mongooses, hutches. There have been pedal pickers, roll backs, rockwalks, tailwhips. In York, there is no old school.
I judge riders by the effort they put into riding and the fun they have. I don't really care about much else. I'd rather ride with a beginner learning tailwhips than a big time "pro" with a bad attitude.
Re: Who needs a Battle when you can have a civilized dispute? posted on 2006-09-23 04:53:47
You know, whenever I think of flatland outside my tennis court, I end up with a head ache. I don't like the battle. Bmx isn't skateboarding and flat isn't breaking.
To me the whole B-Boy culture is based on "fronting". That sirs, is why it's bullshit.
Re: new kevin jones signature frame? posted on 2006-09-23 04:48:52
Didn't talk about that. I did mention that I like the way current HB frames have a nice taper on the stays to the rear drops and that should be kept.

Byke- We discussed the back end issues. They will be fixed.

Yeah, what's great about them?
[/quote]
Well, let's see:
1. It rides beautifully and always feels like it's exactly where I want it to be.
2. The top tube is over 19".
3. FBM means great quality.
4. Leif is a great rider who is worthy of respect.
5. It doesn't look so goofy with curved tubes yet still has the front wheel clearance that I want.
Re: unfair contest!!!!!!!!!!!! posted on 2006-09-19 14:56:42
If contests are going to be a "battle" format, you are gonna see this shit and hear the complaints. If people want to "beat" other riders rather than just ride their best, battles will promote confrontation and conflict.
Re: i hate rednecks posted on 2006-09-19 02:54:32
So someone was shitty to you and you got pissed. What exactly do Rednecks have to do with your story?
Why do you think what you are doing is so superior? Why do you think you are better than them?
Basketball takes no skill? Not a real sport? If riding has taught me anything, it's to appreciate any activity done well. It Doesn't matter if it's flatland, crochet or basketball.
You guys sound like a bunch of narrow minded, proud to be victimized, adolescents. Sometimes people are jerks. You either find a way to deal with them or avoid them. Complaining here does nothing. To call them rednecks and whine about it makes you little better than they are.
Re: FUCKING PISSED AND DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO posted on 2006-09-18 14:19:21
From the original description, it sounds like your back wheel shifted in the drops from you grind. That would explain the loose chain. Make sure your wheel is true also. Brakes are easier to adjust if you think about how they work and understand them. A straight cable is as easy as it gets. If one side is rubbing, your spring tension needs to be adjusted.
Secondly, calm the fuck down. Spazzing out will not make your bike work better or resolve any problem.

Because mountain bikes weren't around when I started.
Re: WTF? James Smith rocks posted on 2006-09-15 16:34:54
A good rider is a good rider. Backflips aren't that tough. It's more mental than physical. I've been doing them 10 years and I consider myself a flatlander. Props to James just the same. Flips are sooo fun.
