Re: I got a trials bike posted on 2007-01-09 15:30:20

I can't upload a picture of mine yet, I still need to get my cable back to connect the camera to computer. I'll try to find a picture of it online, it's the x-lite 221 Cesar Canas replica.

I got a trials bike posted on 2007-01-08 12:20:17

For Christmas, my parents bought me a used Monty x-lite 221 with hydraulic Magura rim brakes front and rear. A pro rider I work with at the shop knew someone that wanted to sell it, and I've been trying to scrape together enough money to buy it since this past summer. My girlfriend talked my parents into getting it for me. For the past year and a half, I've barely been able to make any progress at flatland, so it's nice to have another bike to work with. I've been learning a lot really fast, my balance from flatland seems to really help a lot with things I've been working on. Does anyone else on these forums ride any trials? I've wanted to have a trials bike for years but the bikes are too expensive, and I was always more dedicated to flatland.

It is a sad day. At least I'm able to post (this is a first).

Dailymotion: It's all gone posted on 2006-12-05 10:19:05

All of the TV episodes on Dailymotion are gone. I'm sad. For those that didn't know, almost every single South Park episode, Simpsons, The Office, and lots of other shows were posted. Movies as well. It's all gone. I just noticed this today. I guess they've been removing copyrighted material since November, but sort of took their time with a lot of it. I'm very disappointed.

Corporate flatland company? posted on 2006-11-21 15:47:43

Are there any flatland companies that are corporate? I have another assignment that requires me to analyze a few companies' annual reports, and I wanted to include a bmx company, especially flatland, in my analysis if possible.

Am I the only one who is disappointed with the season finale? I think this and the episode about Pip are probably the 2 least funny episodes they've done.

I invested in some cheap shin guards a few years ago, and I rarely wear them anymore. Occasionally I'll get hurt but unless I'm trying a trick that is too tough for me to be trying, I usually don't have this problem anymore. But shin guards are definitely a good investment especially when learning the basics.

Anyone who hasn't seen Loiter 1 is missing out, that video posted in this thread is just a small sample of some of the crazy stuff from Loiter (which is definitely a few years old at this point and still one of my favorite videos with crazy difficult stuff).

Re: Please, stop posting my videos on youtube posted on 2006-11-09 20:28:07

I happened to have some down time at work a few weeks ago when my boss was talking about how he heard Google was buying Youtube and would start charging people who uploaded videos above a certain size, so I looked around for some information on the transaction. Much more information should be available when Google's annual report comes out in about 5 months (assuming their fiscal year ends December 31st, not sure it does).

Exactly, that's what I'm saying. They could have been getting their bills paid for on borrowed (investor) money.
And going into debt more and more.  To simplify for anyone needing further explanation,  it's like making $10/month and spending $12/month. The other $2 is borrowed. The bills get paid, but the person is still in debt by $2 to the lender.
Technically, you borrow money from a creditor, not an investor. Companies cannot just borrow at will, because investors control how much money comes from borrowing (bonds, commercial paper, credit lines, etc) and also how much money is raised through selling more shares of stock (raises money that doesn't have to be paid back, but each stockholder's or investor's ownership in the company is watered down in relation to how many extra shares are issued).

While I think Youtube's investors obviously planned to make money on their investment, I don't think they intended the company to fund too much of their operations with debt to make the company more marketable to be bought out by bringing it to the brink of bankruptcy.
The only time that really makes a company marketable is if they have a huge loss, and the company that buys them out can then take advantage of the tax loss carryforward/carryback (companies are expected not to merge just for tax benefit purposes, and the IRS is supposed to penalize them for this but it happens often anyways).

By the way, if anyone wonders why Google wanted a stock-for-stock transaction rather than just giving cash to Youtube's owners: tax free.

The reason Youtube was so attractive to Google is because Google is trying desperately to control much of online video, and seeing the opportunity to control Youtube by basically giving away a lot of Google stock to Youtube's owners, they increased their video control online from 11-15% to about 55-65% from many of the articles I read. Even with the large value of the stock that Google gave away, the long-term benefits of what they now control will definitely outweigh what was spent (basically just a relatively small percentage of Google ownership of common shares if I remember correctly).
edit: If I'm dividing correctly, taking an average price from Google's stock, assuming only one person owned all of Youtube, they would now control about 1.8% of Google's outstanding stock (obviously that's not the case, but it's quite a sum of money for those that had 5% of more ownership of Youtube).

All speculation.
Amazon sold millions of dollars worth of products, yet has had great problems trying to break even or make a real profit.
Yes the new owner of you tube has cash, but that does not justify throwing money away.

My bet is that youtube wont see any form of profit for quite a few years yet (speculation again - like your claims)
There is a huge difference between a small privately held company that hosts videos online, and a large online retailer that has to worry about customer service, logistics/freight/transportation/product returns, transactions fees w/ credit card companies, warehousing.......
The google purchase was a stock for stock transaction, and those who held any interest whatsoever in Youtube are now much wealthier. Google's stock was around $50/share the day the market value of their stock was recorded for the transaction to calculate the number of shares transferred to Youtube's owners.
Youtube will make more money for google because Google now controls about 65% of online video, (I think they controlled about 15% before this transaction). They will probably start charging user fees, and google's stock will just continue increasing. It will be interesting to read Google's annual report and see what it says about this transaction and what they plan to do.

I'm pretty sure Google stock went up a few percent, or aaround $4.60 a share the day they acquired Youtube.

Re: Are you a Libertarian? Probably... posted on 2006-11-08 21:54:12

I'm Libertarian, and almost 100%, but leaning slightly to the right it looks like.

Unfortunately I'm very much undecided on just how much I fit into any particular label. I used to support the Libertarian party, but strangely enough I started leaning more towards the Constitution Party in the last presidential election. I haven't had time to worry about any of this with all my schoolwork lately, but I do know that the socialists and communists think my entire profession (accounting) is a tool of the wealthy to keep the working class down.  :|  I know that's what Marx thought.

Good point. Bobby, do you mean videos from the internet in general, or flatland videos on youtube/google/videos previously downloaded?
I spend at least an hour every day watching Pride/K-1 fights and ADCC grappling matches, not so much flatland lately.

I think anything with an american bb is old school. Just my opinion.
My KHE Unique isn't old school (I don't think). But I did get the KHE adaptor to run a Euro bb, I like to have the option.

As far as the Hoffman EP, I never knew anyone that disliked it or broke it. So I'd say it's probably a really solid frame. Two guys in Cleveland both rode theirs for years with no problems with their frames.

Re: How much time do you spend... posted on 2006-11-02 21:13:12

Lately, flatland videos online I might watch a few minutes per week.

When I had an office job with a lot of down time I would watch a few every day, maybe a half hour to an hour total. When I'm not bored at work I'm not usually looking around on the internet for videos personally.

I do think that a PPV through the website is the future though. The UFC.com website allows people to watch live PPV through their site, and previous fights can be seen on a PPV basis. Maybe one day flat events will be covered and riders can pay to watch a contest on the other side of the world by going to a flat website and paying for live footage.

Re: Damn college is more trouble than highschool posted on 2006-11-02 13:27:17

So a guy got dumped, she won't return his phone calls, he still thinks there's a chance, and he's in college? Is he a little slow, or immature for his age? Sounds really strange to me.

Re: Borat Meets David Letterman posted on 2006-11-01 10:37:56

Out of the characters he does, I think that by far the funniest is Bruno. I rented the first 2 seasons of his show when it debuted in the US and was disappointed he does so few skits as Bruno, and more as Ali G and Borat.

Re: Who is your favorite rider? posted on 2006-11-01 10:29:36

I think my favorite riders to watch are those that I listed in the "favorite sections" thread. I'll try to remember who I listed..

Dylan Worsley (Loiter 1 and 2, especially 1)
Stephane Royer  (Loiter 1 and 2, especially 1)
Chase  (Focus)
Scott Powell (Focus)
Rybak (Focus)
Nate Penonzek (Flat Sphere)
Kotara Tanaka (Infinite Pieces)
Alex Jumelin (Infinite Pieces)

When I think of my favorite riders/sections in videos these guys always are the first to come to mind.
