Good lord how did this forum go from 1000 posts a day to 5 posts every 2 weeks?

-HD already in 30 million homes

http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/ptech/01/09/ces.tvs.ap/index.html

-read the bullet at the top.  MORE THAN 1/3 OF US HOUSEHOLDS HAVE A HDTV.
"Sales of both plasma and LCD TVs have been booming, especially with the advent of high-definition digital broadcasting in the United States mandated to take effect by 2009."
That's right ,  digital broadcasting will be mandated in '09 which means more hdtvs will be purchased.

"More than a third of U.S. households owned a high-definition television in 2006 and some 55 percent are expected to own one this year, according to the Consumer Electronics Association."

Hats off to sony for preparing for the future.

I have never had a problem with the ps3 overheating.  I beat call of duty in 3 days  and played it hours on end.  No problem.

Re: Nintendo wii posted on 2007-01-20 01:14:15

"Theres just too many things about the ps3 that weren't very well thought out... whats the point of adding that online service when your limited by hard drive space? Ms thought that one out for sure... gotta have changable hard drives for something like that to be worthwhile... 60gb doesn't do much as far as downloading HD movies.... once you buy the ps3, your just stuck with whatever hard drive size you got when you bought it... No real world options at all... no ifs, and's, or butts on the matter.... your just stuck with what you get...."

Uhhhhhh what the hell are you talking about?   You can change out the hard drive in the PS3.  That is one of the 1st things I read how to do when I opened up the owner's manual.  It's actually quite easy to do to because of the way it was designed.

Do people even know what they are talking about when they start to bash a PS3???  Another common myth I read all the time online is taht if you buy a PS3 you are stuck buying only blue ray movies and you will have to get rid of all your DVDS.   THIS IS COMPLETELY WRONG.  The ps3 plays blue ray as well as regular dvds, music cds, etc.  The claim that "sony is forcing blue ray on people" is completely fallacious.  You can still play all your beloved dvds on the ps3.

Yes you need a hd tv to get the full power of the PS3.  CNN reported alittle while ago that 33% of households in the US already have at least 1 hd tv and that that number is expected to climb much higher over the next several years when prices of hd tvs fall even further.  The PS3, with all its bells and whistles, simply gives consumers more options in the future.

BTW  Fight Night Round 3 for PS3 is absolutely disgusting.  It is probably the best sports game I have ever played.

Re: Nintendo wii posted on 2007-01-04 18:15:44

Tranq, come on man how many times do I have to reiterate,  short term stats are useless.  You are basing the "demand" of PS3's off 1 month's worth of data??  Only time will tell which company will win this round of the console wars, and I doubt anyone will be able to make a reasonable projection until 2 or 3 years down the road.

So there are 3 or 4 wii's to every ps3?  so what?  remember the dreamcast?  it  orginally had the record for fastest  selling system before the ps2 eventually came around the block...and we all know what happened to the dreamcast and sega.

"The Dreamcast enjoyed brisk sales in its first season, and was one of Sega's most successful hardware units. In the United States alone, a record 300,000 units [3] had been pre-ordered before launch and Sega sold 500,000 consoles in just two weeks (including 225,000 sold on the first 24 hours which became a video game record). In fact, due to brisk sales and hardware shortages, Sega was unable to fulfill all of the advance orders. Sega confirmed that it made $98.4 million on combined hardware and software sales with the Dreamcast

...

The Dreamcast sales grew 156.5% from July 23 to September 30 putting Sega ahead of Nintendo 64 in that period. For the month of November 2000, the Dreamcast passed the Nintendo 64 as the second best selling system. During that time, the PlayStation 2 was plagued by production shortages, with people often paying in excess of $1000 on eBay for Sony's next-generation console. However, the Dreamcast's online capabilities through SegaNet (the PlayStation 2 would not go online until late 2002, well after the Dreamcast's demise), and a price cut around Fall 2000 (which made it half the price of the PS2) did little to help sales once the PlayStation 2 was launched.

A key to Sony's relative ease for success with the PlayStation 2 was that they already enjoyed brand-name dominance over Sega after the huge success of the original PlayStation,"   (from wiki  and cited from Game Investor).

the wii may have gotten a fast start due to excellent supplies, price, etc.  but that does not mean anything in the long term view of things.   The dreamcast proves that it  isn't about who sprints the fastest out of the gate, but it is all about who wins the marathon.  LOL the dreamcast even had a 1.5 year headstart on the PS2 and a 3 year start on the GC and Xbox, and got its ass handed to it.

so you say you trust what the "expert"  wall street analysts say?  you trust the same analysts that lost to a monkey chucking darts randomly at internet stock picks that were pasted on a dart board?  LOL the monkey even made a 213% gain on its stock picks, outperforming  6,000 wall street "pros" and became the 22nd best money manager in the entire country!!  The monkey quadrupled the performace of teh DOW and double that of Nasdaq.  So much for what the "experts" say.

So you want another projection from so called experts?  Here is something to chew on.

http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=92328  (which is hopefully a non biased source of gaming news)

" Research and Markets has released their prediction that the PS3 will sell 75 million units by 2010, thereby winning "the console war in the long term."

And where is this weak demand for ps3's??? America isn't the only country on the earth.

http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=91228

"Sales for the week of Dec. 4 to Dec. 10 were a solid 60 percent higher than the week before and that could mean console-maker Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is making good on its promise to increase production of the PlayStation 3. Sales of the console fell for the first three full weeks after launch due to Sony's inability to keep up with demand."

there simply isn't enough supply of ps3's to keep up with demand which is why there are many less ps3's being sold.  this is yet another reason why short term stats are useless  predicting how well ps3 will sell in the long term since there isn't even enough quantity of product to meet the demand.

what's even more interesting

"The latest Media Create figures also show that it's not just Sony that is grappling with supply issues. Nintendo Co. Ltd., which launched its Wii console in Japan on Dec. 2, saw sales fall fast during its first full week on sale due to low supply. Just over 350,000 units of the Wii were sold during launch but this fell to 85,439 in the week of Dec. 4 to 10, said Media Create."

Thats right, you read it correctly the sales of the Wii fell sharply as well, but this is also due to low supplies.  The real contest between xbox, wii, and ps3 doesn't begin until every console is able to adequately saturate the market in every corner of the globe.  THE ONLY CONCLUSION THAT CAN BE REASONABLY CONCLUDED AFTER ONLY 1 MONTH OF SALES IS THAT THE WII SIMPLY SOLD MORE UNITS BECAUSE THERE WERE MORE UNITS AVAILABLE.  Really it isn't that hard to understand,  more product available=more product sold.  The ONLY reasonable comparison of the wii to the ps3 that you could make at this time would be the rate of sales of both of the consoles which would be how many units sold divided by how many were supplied.  I wouldn't doubt that the rate of the sales of both of the systems were close to 100%.

Re: Nintendo wii posted on 2007-01-03 19:08:49

"And yes, the Gamecube did in fact boost sales that much. Link: http://gamecube.gamezone.com/news/11_04_03_08_12AM.htm Nov., 2003 "ales figures gathered from the nation's largest retailers show that Nintendo GameCube effectively doubled its market share to 37 percent from 19 percent. The system now runs a strong second in the U.S. market as it challenges for leadership during the important holiday sales season." How do those words taste, asshole?"

LOL not only are you a tool, you are a complete fucking retard that likes to twist facts for an agenda.  You are quoting an article from '03 that has little relevance to the long term sales figures of the GC.  THAT ARTICLE PROVES ONCE AGAIN THAT STATISTICS TAKEN OVER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME ARE WORTHLESS!  What eventually happened?  Nintendo came in 3rd in the 6th generation console war, selling 21 million GCs, wwhile XBox sold 24 million and PS2 105 million (actually 111 million as of Sept. '06).  Seriously, I don't think you could have picked a more biased source to quote from.

Re: Nintendo wii posted on 2007-01-03 17:50:18

"The GameCube doubled Nintendos market share (from 19% to 37%) 3. Nintendo still holds the largest share of the market, mostly because of it's hand-helds."

Really??  I would like to hear the explanation behind that please.

NES=60 million units
Super Nintendo=49 million units
N64=33 million
Game cube=22 million

ps1=101 million
ps2=105 million

The GC sold almost 11 million less than the N64 but managed to increase Nintendo' s market share by 20%????  LOL please explain that to me.  Did millions of people suddenly stop buying video games?

Even if you add up how many DS's GC's N64's SNES  NES's and Wii's nintendo sold that still doesn't even add up to as much as how many  PS1's and PS2's sony has sold.

Nintendo definitely owns the hand held video game console market, that is undisputed.  But that just proves once again that Nintendo caters to a younger audience.  How many 18-30 year old guys do you see going around playing a gameboy or DS? None.  The ones playing those are in grade school.  Nintendo really needs to get its act together with the WII.  The best selling video games always are and always will be sports games.  No one can argue with the fact that sports games on Nintendo have been piss poor for a long time; sports titles sold by EA etc. have always sold FAR FAR less on nintendo consoles than on PS and XBox and even Sega Genesis.  Why?  Because Nintendo users mostly support 1st party games like Zelda, Mario, etc.  Many video game players who are older will simply choose a 360 or PS3 simply because of the sports titles alone.    Nintendo had some 3rd party support like the Resident evil series and Perfect dark, but look what happened.  Nintendo shit the bed and lost those gigantic titles to other systems.  The Perfect Dark for the 360 was probably one of the best games of '06.

As for the wii mote, only time will tell if it is successful or if it was a gimmick.  Crap like this has been tried before like the fishing rod for Sega Bass fishing, the power glove, guns for shooter games, driving wheels with gas and brake pedals for driving games, but all those ended in massive failures.  The wiimote really isn't that innovative or revolutionary like nintendo fanboys claim,  game makers have been there and tried that before.

Listen, it  isn't that I hate Nintendo simply because it is Nintendo, I just hate how Nintendo tries to go it alone with their games and pretty much relies solely on its 1st party games (which a lot of the times are for young kids).   Why don't you actually take a look at the reviews of the games aimed at older audiences that were mentioned in this thread.  they all pretty
 much have gotten extremely poor reviews.  Nintendo was great back in the day of NES and SNES, but Nintendo got stale quickly once they started to ignore the older audiences when teh N64 rolled around.

Re: Nintendo wii posted on 2007-01-02 20:26:29

1.) I love these so called "statistics" that prove Sony will fail.   LOL it has only been 1 month, these so called stats being referenced are meaningless. If you flipped a coin 3 times, landed on heads twice, would you conclude that you would land on heads 66% of the time if you flipped the coin 1000 times?  of course not, it would be absurd.  short term statistics are most of the time simply  worthless.   Nintendo is notorious for having extremely poor 3rd party support and it will be their achille's heel once again.  im not a wii fanboy, so please can you tell me some big name titles that are going to be on the wii that are not Nintendo Franchise names like mario, metroid, etc?  The novelty of the Wii will wear off fast.  Like socal said, the wii and its remote are cool for a little while, but after a long time it just gets annoying.  Sure nintendo may have had the jump out of the gate (because of larges supplies), but the video game console war is not a sprint it is a marathon, and Nintendo is already FAR FAR behind.

2.)  You know what the funniest part of this whole stupid argument is?   The PS2 still sells more consoles than the 360, ps3, and the wii.  Nintendo has to make up some serious ground to cover all that it lost on its massive failure that became known as the gamecube which only sold a paltry 20 milion units in 4+ years (compare that to the 105 million PS2 ).  If the wii fails, you might as well kiss your precious Nintendo goodbye.  Nintendo would be delegated to only making games like Sega and probably hand held gaming devices like the gameboy.  You say the PS3 sucks because it is to difficult for game makers to program for?   Well I certainly don't see game makers rushing to the wii with the elite titles....   Face it, Nintendo has had no 3rd party support for a long time and probably won't either for the Wii.  This is a HUGE drawback for the wii.

"video games all childish? maybe, but i think there are big differences between games say like metal gear solid and gears of war versus something like mario party or donkey kong." Yeah, there are differences, especially in who wants to play what. People my age (21+) prefer Super Mario Galaxy and Super Samsh Bros. because most of us don't waste our lives in front of the television playing games, while children (under 18) want the same games as you.

lol right..... somebody's emotion seems to be getting the better of them.  so it is only kids under 18 that desire games like gears of war, assassin's creed, or metal gear solid 4????? lol listen to what you are saying, it is completely rediculous.     so you don't waste your life in front of the tv screen playing video games.  good.  oh wait whats that?  4226 posts? lol that is pretty much 10x's what i have posted (and i have been around since backlash bmx days). it sure  sounds like someone is wasting a hell of a lot of time in front of a computer.  seriously, stop being a nintendo homer....

Re: Nintendo wii posted on 2006-12-23 15:11:30

goddamnit how the hell did i get sucked back into this conversation.

why do you think that wii is selling the most?  hmmm let's see probably the $250 price tag maybe????  just because it sells the most doesn't make it the best.  are ford cars better than ferraris  just because ford sells millions of cars while ferrari sells 1000 cars per year?   just because most of the public can't afford to buy a ps3 doesn't mean the ps3 sucks. I've got a comp with a quad core QX6700 working with a GTX8800SLI. That comp is better than the Ps3 but not by far and my comp costs 6x's as much as the ps3. the price of the ps3 may be high, but I always have believed that "you get what you pay for"  . i have nothing against nintendo, i am just a fan of good video games whether they would be on the ps3, xbox360, or the wii.  But from what i have read, most of the elite games are going to be on the 360 pc or ps3 which is why i decided to go with a ps3.  too bad nintendo couldnt have kept the perfect dark series for the wii, that probably would have enticed me to buy one.

lol hilarious onion article on ps3 vs. wii:

Re: Nintendo wii posted on 2006-12-22 00:31:48

once  again your video game console homerism is just stupid.  i clearly stated that i was impressed most the intelligence of the AI in the ps3 games i have played so far, not the graphics.  video games all childish?  maybe, but i think there are big differences between games say like metal gear solid and gears of war versus something like  mario party or donkey kong.  the impressive titles coming out next year aimed at older audiences (18+) are going to be on the xbox 360 and ps3.

i am now  done with this thread  because arguing over video games is completely retarded.

Re: Nintendo wii posted on 2006-12-21 22:13:17

I have a 60 gb ps3.  This thing is amazing.  All this console homerism is stupid.  THe games for ps3 suck right now, but there will be some incredibly  impressive titles coming out next year.  can you really compare how many wii's sold to how many ps3's sold when there were probably many more wii's shipped than ps3's?  i havent even bought a ps3 game yet, just rented them.   the most impressive thing about the ps3 so far to me is the intelligence of the AI.  the enemies have been much smarter compared to everything i have played on the pc or any other home console thus far.  I have played the wii at my friend's house, and it is fun, but most nintendo games are simply too childish for my tastes and have been since N64 (although there are a handful of awesome games for past nintendo systems for older audiences).  most people haven't even used or played a ps3 and haven't seen the awesome power of this amazing little black box yet.

D. who in ther rite mind would pay $600 for a gaming system?
I would.  The $600 price tag for PS3 is a steal for what you are getting.  blue ray players alone are like $1000.  sony and microsoft don't really make profit on the gaming systems, but make all the money from the games.  i read before in Forbes magazine that microsoft has never made a profit from the xbox systems.
some people think the only pre-sales the system is getting are people who think they can price jack it on ebay come christmas time... and if the people that want to buy and play it aren't there... your going to end up selling it at a loss
Doubt it.  At worst all you can do is break even and it is really no big deal then.  Even if I had to sell it for a loss, I would just opt out to keep it for myself because I eventually want one.  So in the end if you preorder it and hope to sell it, you really can't lose.

Re: ps3 !!! posted on 2006-11-09 18:14:37

ps3 is going to sell out instantaneously.  they are only going to have 400,000 units shipped and by the time christmas season rolls around, you won't find one for less than $2000.  haha gamepro has already reported that some people have already started to wait in line at best buy for it.  http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=85791

good thing i preordered mine and my friend works at the video game store.  I can't wait to sell it to some rich a-hole for $2500 right before christmas.

right now i'm a junior and i'm taking trig. and physics and so far they're pretty fun mainly because i really like figuring out problems and i like being able to see why/how it works
Thats good.  Now all you really need is to have a little bit exposure to some advanced math thinking.  This can be simple.  Example think of the fuction f(x)=2x and let your inputs only be the integers.  This just looks like a simple collection of dots if you graphed it right. But what is it really saying?  It is really saying you are taking every integer-2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ....  and getting back only even numbers. It is basically a pairing between all the integers and the even numbers, which means that the set of all integers and the set of all even numbers have to be the same infinite size.  Stuff like this used to preplex mathematicians back in the day because how could those two sets be the same size if the evens basically are made of half the numbers of the integers?  Take it even a step further.  can you think of a function f(x) that maps every number between 0 and 1 to only the integers or vice versa?  No.  It can't be done.  Why?  because there are more numbers between 0 and 1 than all the integers.  What is the conclustion?  That there are different sizes of infinity.    you can keep going on and on and you willl find out that there are actually an infinite sizes infinty.  If you think think stuff is interesting then be a math major.  This is the type of thinking you will do for most of your undergraduate career, math isn't just about solving equations in a mechanistic manner.

Re: anyone here some kind of engineer? posted on 2006-09-07 20:33:18

I'm not an engineer but I do have a degree in mathematics.  Why not pursue math as a degree if you like it so much?  It gets very interesting once you take some upper level classes.  Honestly, most of the math that science and engineers do is just problem solving as in just using calculus, differential equations, and algebra.  A computer can do this.  If you want to learn real math as in actually learning how to develop formal proof for an argument, be a math major.  While there are computers that can do proofs, they don't come close to what some humans have proven.
