Re: Taska Freecoaster hub maintenence questions. posted on 2007-03-21 11:10:12

Adam, the only effective mod for making a Taska work that I know of is to unlace the hub and throw it in the trash.  Kent Pearson and I both got the old aluminum shelled ones bitd - I thought it was great....super light compared to my Suntour, seemed to work okay.  Then the next week I did a fakie on a mini ramp, the hub locked up, and I smashed my head into the ground.  That was enough for me.  Those things are dangerous, the only person I've ever seen run them effectively for any length of time is KJ.

I always ride the vert ramp first when I get to the park.  Everything else seems small in comparison.  Brett, you should try the deep bowl of the Athens park.  Its 11.5 and I am ALMOST getting out of it, so I'm sure you could get 3-4" no problems.
I have to go back to Lot 8 and work some more on that vert ramp, too.  Ver t is great.

I used to run an 18T BACK cog on my freecoaster back in the early 90's.  Finding 16T ones was basically impossible, but you could find 18-20 really easily..... I can't believe someone made one that small in front.  Seems like you'd break chains all the time....

Re: Who is your favorite rider? posted on 2006-10-14 20:32:34

My favorite flatlanders, in no particular order

Raymond Martin - 80's Savannah local. Knew all the good tricks the week after they appeared in the magazine.  Still wonder where he went.

Kevin Jones - every flatlander should ride at least one sesssion with the K.

Chase - I just wish Chase could be happy with what he's done on a bike.  Cheer up, Chase, you've done well.

Kent, Jody, Gregg, Jon, Darrin W. - My AthFam brothers.  No AthFam in flatland = riding sucks.

Brett Downs - Rockledge real keeper.  Always beats me in double decade contests.  Thanks for the Sunday dinners, btw.

Leif - for designing my bike and giving me and my ex-girlfriend his "friends and family passes" at the X-Trials one time.  Thanks man.

Chad Johnston - for putting me in Linkt in 1998.  Double pegade, my favorite hard to hit trick.
: )

Penonzek - if I could steal anyone's riding style, it would be his.  Imitation is the strongest form of flattery.  I'm still working on imitating him.

Shayne and Roman - I've seen them go from young groms to Neon Media kings and great riders.  It seems like only yesterday we were sneaking them into the bar....

DMC - most people here are too young to appreciate, but a double backwards whiplash to funky chicken is crazy no matter what decade you're in.

Dave McDaniel - Super consistent, hard tricks, good attitude.  The ATL scene misses Dave.

Joe Fedo - Art student and rider in the early 90's - now designs TV and movie sets and paints murals for the Playboy Mansion Halloween party.  Who says that flatlanders aren't successful?

Stephan Cerra - Flatland's  most stylish rider and personality.  Smooth style, super hard tricks, cool cat.  I'm sorry I didn't get to hang out with him again before I moved.

NEV - Put me in FM 5.

Gary Pollack - invented three of my favorite tricks - pinky squeaks, perverted decade, and fire hydrant.  Was sitting next to me in Brett's truck when we rolled over a deer coming home from Woodward last year.  Surreal.

TJ - cocky, but flatland needs charismatic, self assured riders.  I could see TJ being the Dave Mirra of flatland.  Time will tell....

Jfos - for providing me with a place to live currently, and just being a cool guy and a great rider.

That all I can think of right now, but I'm sure there's more.  Luckily this sport has a lot of cool cats in it.

Re: Is this a high bunnyhop? posted on 2006-09-26 07:00:52

That hop isn't that high but your getting there.  Practice and you'll get better.

By my own system that I just now made up....

Less than 24" = low hop
25-30" = average hop
30" + good sized, respectable hop
anything over 40" = great, pro level hop

Remember Seth K went 44" high in a contest last year and it was a big enough deal to make a headline on the cover of Ride UK.  Anything over 40 is insane, and it has been since the days when Woody Itson set the world record at 42" or something.

Last time I looked the standing world record was Brian Lopes with a 52" hop or something.
