Wedding Dresses - What To Wear
You have begun to plan your wedding and you want your wedding to be special and unique to your and your future spouse. There are traditions and superstitions that have grown around the wedding ceremony, the bride, and what the bride wears in particular. Let's take a look at some of them.
Q. Does the color of the dress really matter?
Most brides wear white to symbolize maidenhood. White also is the symbol of purity and virginity. Cream and Ivory are also acceptable colors and they carry the same symbolism as white.
Q. Are there rhymes about wedding customs?
There are several but let's look at just two of them. There is the well known
1. Something old, something new; Something borrowed, something new, and a six-pence in her shoe.
This rhyme talks about different color wedding dresses and what they mean.
2. Married in white, you've chosen right. Married in blue, your love will always be true. Married in peaRl, you will live in a whirl. Married in brown, you will live in town. Married in red, you'll wish yourself dead. Married in yellow, ashamed of your fellow. Married in green, ashamed to be seen. Married in pink, your spirit will sink. Married in gray, you'll go far away.
Q. What types of dresses are appropriate for different times of the day?
A formal daytime wedding is when the bride wears a white, ivory or pastel colored floor length gown with a train and a long veil.
For a formal evening wedding, the bride would wear the same type of dress as for the daytime formal but with more elaborate train and fabric.
For a semiformal daytime wedding, the bride usually wears a white or pastel colored floor or tea length dress with an elbow length or shorter veil.
For a semiformal evening wedding a more elaborate fabric and trim can be used but the dress and the veil is the same as for the semiformal daytime wedding.
For an informal wedding the bride can wear a white or pastel colored floor or tea length dress. She could also wear a dressy suit. A short veil or a hat is optional.
Q. Why does the garter get thrown by the groom?
It was thought to be good luck to get a piece of the bride's clothing or flowers, you would receive good fortune. In the 14th century Europeans gathered around the bride to try to remove her garter for good luck. In order to get away the bride would throw her bouquet into the crowd. The groom removes her garter and tosses over his shoulder to the crowd. The single man who catches the garter gets the privilege of putting the garter on the single woman who caught the brides bouquet.
Q. Do traditions exist in reference to the bride's shoes?
One tradition said that the father of the bride would give the groom a pair of the bride's shoes to symbolize the passing of the responsibility of the care of the daughter to the groom.
A bride puts a penny in her shoe to ensure that she and her husband will have good luck and wealth.
Q. Why is it bad luck for a bride to wear pearls?
An old superstition from Mexico says that the bride should not wear pearls on her wedding day because they are the tears she will cry during her marriage.
Q. What is the Dorothy Bag?
The Dorothy Bag was originally called the Dolly Bag and was carried by the bridesmaids. They were full of confetti to throw at the bride and groom after the ceremony. In more modern times however the bride carried the Dorothy Bag as a small purse with some personal effects. Most brides now carry the bag with a bridal handkerchief a penny or quarter and it is used to carry cards and money in, so they can use it on their honeymoon.
Q. Why is it that the groom should not see the bride in her outfit before the
ceremony?
The groom should not see his bride before the wedding because it is believed to mean that the marriage is doomed. Years ago, marriages were arranged and the couple didn't set eyes on one another till after the wedding ceremony. It was after the ceremony that the veil was lifted and the groom and bride were able to kiss which is the symbol of a beginning of a physical relationship. The reasoning was that if the groom saw his bride before the wedding and didn't like her looks he might cancel the wedding. This had the potential of dividing two countries or regions because marriages were often between tribes or countries.
Q. Why do some brides leave the last stitch undone until just before she is ready to leave for the wedding?
This stems from the superstition that it is unlucky for a bride to wear her complete outfit before the big day. Some brides leave the last stitch undone to ensure good fortune.
Q. Do I have to adhere to any of these traditions or superstitions?
No of course you don't have to use them you can make your wedding your own. It might be interesting though to look at your cultural history and see what superstitions or traditions might be unique to your heritage. The Celtics have many superstitions and traditions surrounding weddings and brides in particular. The world's religions often have their own traditions, rites, or superstitions. If you and your future spouse have a different heritage it might be fun to see if you can use some from each of your cultures. This would make your wedding unique and probably fun.

Digg Dialog with Tony Hawk
I just proposed a question for the Digg Dialogg coming up with Tony Hawk. My question is: "As an athlete who has shared ramps with professional bikers such as Mat Hoffman and Dave Mirra, how do you justify the Tony Hawk Foundation building parks that do not allow bikes to ride them?"
If you have a Digg account, please head over and Digg this question up! http://digg.com/dialogg/Tony_Hawk_1?t=28974105#c28974105

X Games Medalist Young Takes a Dive - seasmoke
X Games Medalist Young Takes a Dive
From Killer Tabletops to Wrecks and Reefs
by Margo Malcolm
Since he was a kid, Gary Young, 2009 ‘X’ Games BMX Freestyle Bronze Medalist, has been defying gravity, hanging in the air twisting and turning on his bike. Now he is taking his love of extreme activities down under the sea. “Snorkeling was really like the gateway for me to get into diving.” said Young, 26. “I started snorkeling a few years ago and it really sparked my interest. I learned about sea life and hanging out under water was a new thing for me. It’s always been something I’ve been interested in but I didn’t really get hooked until I went snorkeling.”

Young has started his diving certification through PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors). When he first expressed interest about diving to a friend he discovered that his friend’s girlfriend and her father both worked for PADI.
“I was talking to him about getting into diving and he said his girlfriend had been trying to get him into diving for a while but he’d been scared,” said Young. “And I said let’s do it together. One thing led to another and now we’re on our way into diving.”
Young began his diving training with PADI’s eLearning. PADI eLearning courses allow beginners to complete the classroom portion of certification at their own pace, whenever or wherever it’s convenient for them. The eLearning system consists of interactive presentations that include videos, audio, graphics and reading, and is available in seven languages.
Since Young lives in southern California, he was able to go to PADI’s head office for his confined water dives. This is followed by two open water dives and completion of his diving certification.
Another reason Young chose PADI certification was because he found when he did some research that PADI certification was accepted worldwide. This was important to him because Young travels a lot. The BMX circuit takes him all over the world, including some of the best diving places like Thailand, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia. PADI has over 5300 dive shop and resort members worldwide.
Although Young spends most of his days on the road practicing and competing on his bike, perfecting his killer tabletops and 360s, he’ll be taking sometime to check out the local marine life.
“I’ve been to so many places and now I’ll have the opportunity to go out and see what is underwater and check out the reefs and wreck ,” said Young. “Diving seems so cool to me.”

How long will you let your self get ripped off?
How long will the riding community allow the bmx companies to sell shit parts that don't last that cost more money than the parts we had 5 years ago that did actually last....
heres some interesting things to think about:
raw material is a nice chunk of the cost.... lighter bikes use less raw material.... but yet when things got lighter, the price went up?
Some kmart bikes that only cost a few hundred dollars will take just as good of a beating as what your paying $2000 for.... the only thing on them I can say for certain really sucks is the wheels... puts some good wheels on a kmart bike, and it will take quite a bit of flatland beating.... and it wont cost you the price of a used car.... and when you break it, you can replace the whole bike for the cost of replacing 1 or 2 parts of pro quality stuff that doesn't even last as long....
How many times in the past year or so has your riding suffered because of faulty parts? waiting for a warrantied part to come in the mail.... waiting to have money to replace a part you got screwed out of the warranty on...... had people from out of town come hundreds of miles to ride with you, only for a session ruining part to break and ruin your entire weekend(marty, that ones for you).....
seriously people.... the flatland community has to have shown itself to be the most gullable group of people I've ever met.... How many of you idiots bought plastic pegs and expected them to work? what next balsa wood? If aaron frost told the masses that they would ride better if you sawed one of your legs off to save weight, half the flat community would be hobblin around on crutches with a wooden leg.....
Shit like this is not good for the image of flatland, or the sport as a whole.... draining the life blood of the sport(the regular joe smoe riders who spend their hard earned money to buy parts and travel to events), is the worst possible thing the industry could do to its customers..... especially in economic hard times like this.....
the economy is going to be a wearing factor on the youth of our sport since they have to rely on their parents to provide the parts for them.... if the parts don't last, and their parents wont keep buying shitty parts that don't last, your essentially throwing the future of this sport in the trash..... I don't know about you or what your motivation for riding is.... but thats the last thing I want to see happen.... I know at least 5 people who've straight up had to quit riding because they couldn't afford to replace the parts they broke.... and im sure some kid down the block from you or some friend you've been riding with for years may very well be in the same boat....
so, if you are anyone you know has broken some shitty ass parts and felt totally ripped off and dumb for even buying the stuff.... don't sit there quiet as fuck about it.... do something about it.... sure a lot of companies warranty stuff.... but warranty's are for the most part worthless... once something breaks, you lost all confidence in that product... you don't want a replacement, you want your money back to buy something else.... a replacement for a shitty part that broke does you no fucking good what so ever when you put it back on your bike knowing its just going to suck as much as the one you broke n sent back... call the retailer you bought the shitty parts from and demand better parts.... its the only thing that will get you what you want.... sitting there quiet accepting the proverbial dick in your ass is only going to make things worse for you and your fellow rider... a replacement is not good enough for the kind of money you guys spend on parts.... I know between my brother and I, we've spent over $9k on bike parts since 2000..... if you think about the long run costs of what your doin.... you'll realize how bad your getting screwed...
you the consumer are the ones with purchasing power to control what you get.... if you allow yourself to be a doormat, your going to get stepped on....
