I haven't replied to anythin on this forum in awhile.. but this caught my eye so here goes.... I agree..kinda. It can get annoying sometimes, yet it can be cool as hell, depending on the rider whose pulling the shit.. I don't know about anyone else here, but i can watch viki and martti all night..why?.. because they have shit loads of tricks (mostly Martti), they can take very old school shit and whip up some crazy shit....i guess it people should stop watching videos for awhile and actually use they're heads to create something that they " Think" they've never seen before...i really think that shit loads of riders should be more creative, yet its always good to see a new balance point and create off of that??...
...I use to be a rider who would fucking spin and spin and spin till i puked ( just ask TJ )..then i got sick of it, so i opened up a few doors and now i'm doing shit that i never thought i'd do. don't get me wrong, i still turbine and shit, i mean come on..i've watched all those spinning riders.. Jimmy P.. Kimmo Hakana, Jeff D. and who ever, and i've never seen the things that i have planned in my head, so i MUST continue this journey of spins and turbines...and other things..
but anyone back to the poiint...stop watching videos,, it'll help you be more creative...trust me..i've been doing it for awhile....
Ask yourself this question: " Did i ride hard enough today?"

I don't think that's nessicarily true. I've found a lot of tricks just by experimenting with other peoples tricks. Learning them, then adding my own twist to them. You can still be original, and in touch with whats going on.
Even if you do do something original, someone else has done it before, so what excuse will you use, that you simply didn't see it? Wel it doesn't fly. I've learned tons of stuff, shown it, then turned around to hear people calling me a copycat for learning something without knowing someone else has already done it.
I give up so whatever.

----I more or less agree that - not - watching videos of other riders, won't do much either way for your own creativity. There seems to be 2 main groups of OG type rider, ones that just are that way somewhat naturally, in that they just always think of or find new ways to do moves, and the 2nd is the group that purposely tries to do new stuff, like they spend time thinking about it, and just generally try harder to, they focus on that. The inbetween ? Well, they mostly do what they've seen, but if it weren't for videos, that would be a few less turbined steamrollers I suppose, but it would just shift to whatever was in the magazine, or whatever their friends were doing. ----Ultimately, you can't force a person to "be original", you can only encourage it. And yeah, even I'll admit, style can make a move/link look different if someone else does it, and that a new - in - or - out - of a trick is worth 1/2 points at least ha-ha. ----Ideally, when a rider got to a certain level, that being where they were more or less able to learn anything new that came out if they spent enough time at it, then they would just start making their own stuff up. Some do, and some don't. ----As for videos showing too many of any one trick, hmm, well, I'd be inclined to blame the person who made the video, certainly they could make a video with no trick repeats at this point in time if that was what they chose to do, if they weren't "copying" the last video they saw perhaps....

Everyone flatlander I've ever met has referred to flatland as something above and beyond just riding a bike, yet you sound like some marketer trying to boil shit down to asthetics alone. What the fuck does it matter if you think it's boring, or "everyone's" doing it. If someone is willing to a few years into learning something just because it's trendy then how in the hell can you criticize them?

I'm like yo just do what feels good, no matter what your level or what everybody else is doing on the vids. Who cares? I dont each to the own, |Yeh im sure nobody wants to see the same old stuff, but lets face it tricks are hear to stay no matter who's doing them or how frequantly at comps etc. I do hear what peeps are saying i mean the whole reason i started riding FLat was to get away from the clicky bitchy scene that was at my local skatepark 6 years ago Anyway keep ridings all ive got to say........ -Impossibe is nothing! |

Whether or not doing an entire run of turbined steamrollers is pro-level or not, judges seem to be judging that way. So it just encourages people to do an entire run of one trick turbined over and over.
Personally I don't think being able to do one trick really well, really fast, and flawlessly makes a rider automatically in the pro class. Judging is really subjective, I know this, but I personally would like to see more guys getting high scores that do a variety of stuff on both wheels. To me that is more impressive than spinning or turbining one trick.
I always see threads like this and remember the videos posted of contests from the mid or late 90's, with Chad Degroot, Dylan Worsley, guys who were doing crazy and original/unique stuff on both wheels. You never saw two guys do the same entire run, or use one trick as their entire run. I'm not saying my opinion is best, but I thought I'd throw my opinion out there, and I'm sure most people on this forum probably agree with me.

I agree. I used to win contests with turbine steamrollers when lots of other people were doing stuff that was WAY harder.
