I think the people owe something to its government for the freedoms we still do enjoy.  While military service is an extremely unreasonable way of choosing a way to repay the government, I do think that there is always something.
Simple things like community service, or maybe they need to set up some kind of National gaurd that isn't a military service, and only be deployed for things like natural disasters or whatever kind of non-military duty National Guardsmen get deployed to do in the USA.

The government is suppose to serve it's people. It's not the other way around.

So you feel you owe nothing to the government, absolutely nothing.  Nothing to the people that aided New Orleans in its time of need.  Nothing to the people that aids its people when you get fired, if you get hurt, when shit goes wrong in your life.  Maybe the next time you get hurt and you can't work anymore, hey the government doesn't do anything for you, what does it matter to them you never did anything for them, what do they owe you.  And don't tell me you give them taxes, all of that goes to programs for the people.

We are free, and I don't think anyone here really, truly believes that we are remotely comparable to the way it is in China or North Korea. That said, to think we are as free as we are lead to believe is rather naive. Take everything with a grain of salt and only believe 1/4 of what you read and 1/2 of what you see...

BTW, here is an example of how we are not quite as free as you may think we are:
http://www.2600.com/rnc2004/

Read that entire article and tell me that the government doesn't bully people, and take away freedoms as they see fit... Yes, the NYPD was the direct "perpetrators," but do you really think they acted without any sort of oustide and higher level infulence?

T.

Thats a really good article, but it is missing alot of information, like why they were detained to begin with.  There is deffinitly a reason, and I feel the person isn't saying it for a reason.  No excuse for what he went through and the treatment they all got, but still anyone can pull a Michael Moore type story out of their back pack and make it seem like a grave injustice.

Most of you guys would love so much for the government to imploy Martial Law, take control of your lives, just so you would feel vindicated for all your accusations.  But until the day that all of this happens, you will be alone and bitter, for the government that you so desperatly wish to not work, is still working.

Most of the relief were paid professionals. What's more, I paid them. Their salaries come from taxes, taxes that I've paid since I was 18 and started working, not thin air. Those that were volunteers were not organized by the government, or affiliated with it in any way. When I get fired, I collect unemployment. Where does that money come from? Well, it's not a government hand out. It's a pool that's paid into. If you have never worked, you don't collect, because you didn't put in. If I get hurt, I have health insurance. Health insurance I've paid for.

And yeah, I do pay taxes, and all of that money does go to programs for people. If I didn't pay, and still recieved benifits, then yeah, I would owe them. I've never collected SSI or tasted government cheese in my life. Well, I did take about 4 cases of MRE's, and a 25ftx50ft blue tarp. Considering I pay about 35 cents on the dollar in gasoline taxes, I'd say that's paid for in one tank.

a lot of stupid kids, like the ones who post on this forum (race fit) don't have a clue how unemployment works. i know this is way off topic, but i've experinced this first hand and i think unemployment insurance is one of the best things the average worker has going for him or her, as far as the government is concerned. kids i talk to these days can't distinguish between unemployment insurance and welfare. if people would only take the time to try and understand how these things really work instead of making dumbass race-fit style remarks about political bs, then we might get somewhere as a society. for now we're stuck debating gay marriage.

I know exactly how unemployment works, and attack me if you will, I don't really care.

Mr Jowee, all taxes paid to the government goes to these programs for the people.  Unemployment, welfare, works-men comp which I was eluding at with my statement, these programs cost more to run than get paid back into them.  This is what the government does for the people it has all of these set-up for the people.  Nothing is free and all the programs that people take for granted do cost alot of money to run again more than the government makes in taxes.  With the New Orleans reference I was talking more about manpower hours and supplies rather than contractors, National Guard and other such flood fighting personell as well as the ones there to try and keep some order.  Cops, firemen(non-volunteer), paramedics(non-volunteer), all of that costs money, government money.

And DaveG ohh DaveG, while discussions with Mr Jowee is possible because he doesn't jump and attack when something goes against his opinion, big keyword there by the way, you do, and I do so enjoy making people like you lives miserable.  First of all I'm not a kid, get that through your head.  Secondly if you want to be taken seriously, type correctly and phrase a sentence.  Proper grammar and punctuation goes along way, spelling I don't mind so much.  It is really hard to take someone seriously when their obvious care for their own opinion comes in the form of a long run on sentence, fragments, or seemingly no use of capital letters except for in segments where all the letters are capital.  Also drop the whole 13 year old school yard bully mentality, all that ever lands anyone is less respect.  This is or at least was a discussion among educated adults, not a yelling match among pre-teens.

Obviously you missed the point of what I was saying.  I do sympathize with their situation, it was a damn shame what happened to them, and I do feel it is a travesty.  But before I jump to conclusions and think that I know the whole story, I would really like to know all the facts.  The author doesn't have all the facts, just what he knows about what happened to himself.  From what I have read, this isn't an uncommon occurrence in NYC of taking in protestors during major city events.  Again though there seems to be more to the story than what is being said, and it may be one of those facts that just goes lost to time.  It may not be too, it might be exactly what it seemed.
Again though, anybody can write a story about injustices, some people make careers out of movies about such things.  The fundamental problem with doing such types of work is that they never take into consideration the opinions and facts of the opposition which they so openly attack.  There are 2 or more sides to every story, writing without knowledge of the others is called slanted journalism.

Your exactly one of those people I'm talking about here.  Such strong belief that there is something devious going on with the government that you throw all reasoning out the window.  Until the day that you are proved right, you live this empty existence, bickering about how the government is unconstitutional, while enjoying all of your liberties and freedoms with no disregard.  Again though, having such a belief is almost an oxymoron of your existence.  You get to enjoy the freedom to think and say what you wish about the government, while you bash it because you think its taking away that right from you.  Do you not see something wrong with just the basic reasoning of it all?

I know you aren't going to read all that I have posted.  From what you reply, you seem to read the first and last sentence and make up the rest in your head.  But surprise me and make an intelligent response that isn't just personal attacks interjected with faulty reasoning and poor assumptions and you will regain the respect I had for you and your opinions.

I don't know if anyone else has this same view point in here, but I have respect for all opinions said in reply to me or just posted in general.  But when people start the name calling I lose the respect, and then their opinions really mean nothing to me.

I really wish people would bestow the same view point on me as I do on them.  Regardless of opinion we all share common bonds on many grounds, and if people would finally realize this, then we might actually get some where in society.

Tear..Tear...Drop...Drop  and now that you've gotten your heart to heart out of the way. You say

"And don't tell me you give them taxes, all of that goes to programs for the people".

and I say "them taxes of yours also pay for bombs that have killed innocent children".

Back to the real topic!

If a person has the priviledge or rights or freedom to eat what ever they want, but someone keeps shoving turnips down their throat, they're not to complain that they want something different? I have to break it down to your level so you can see the same difference.

Not sounding proper enough? Bad grammer? Don't understand me? Do you think your better than the next guy because you watch your P's and Q's when you type? Seems like it.

You feel so proud of what your country has done for you and you are willing to put your life in death,  because you feel you owe them something?

Can someone really pull out some Michael Moore story out of their backpack without proven facts? Maybe not if your a hard-nosed consevative who is the perfect human being.

Not writing in paragraph form or our we just too stupid to your standards?
