the idea of a draft doesn't scare me now but after the next terrorist attack - then it will be a whole different story.

I would server for the united states of america, but only to defend our country from a "real threat"... but the usa died the day the patriot act came into effect.... So that really doesn't mean anything... They nullified the constitution so all of that stuff means nothing to me.

I do like the proposed idea for " required national service".  It should be mandatory for everyone to do at least 1 year's worth of volunteer work to be a citizen.  Think about it, 99% of everyone in this country does absolutely nothing to deserve being a citizen of the US, they are just born here.

I thought the massive amount of taxes we pay to a rouge government was the price we paid to be a citizen.

The US is about freedom; the freedom to let your ass grow in front of the tube.

Apathy=the biggest threat to America

You think americans pay an enormous amount of tax?  Europeans pay much much more in taxes than we do and don't complain nearly as much.

If the draft came about for a good cause, like that of World War 2, I would probably feel different about it. Looking at the current situation and trying to find a good reason for a draft based on that situation is like trying to pull blood from a stone. There is no good cause for a draft at present, none.

Regardless of any reasoning, if you are born in the United States of America, you are born a citizen, just like every other free country in the world. Why after decades of this should it change? My forefathers slaved and fought for the freedoms I have (used to have...) so their future families could live in this country in "peace and prosperity." I should not have to be drafted to earn my right to be a citizen of this country, nobody born AND bred here should (meaning parents were citizens), enough blood has been spilled for us to have that right, adding more to the bucket is stupid.

Again, if you are born in the US as a child of a US citizen, there is no reason that you can justify to me for having to "earn" that citizenship. Especially not in the form of being forced to serve in a hostile military for reasons that I don't agree with.

I think the people owe something to its government for the freedoms we still do enjoy.  While military service is an extremely unreasonable way of choosing a way to repay the government, I do think that there is always something.
Simple things like community service, or maybe they need to set up some kind of National gaurd that isn't a military service, and only be deployed for things like natural disasters or whatever kind of non-military duty National Guardsmen get deployed to do in the USA.

And while you may think we aren't free anymore, or whatever most of you have going on in your minds, try going to China, or N. Korea or some other kind of fucked up country.  Where people are taken away to prisions because they make vague emails referencing peace and a new government.  Completely oblivious to you, your being able to type on this forum, go home when you want, work where ever you feel, do as you wish with your life, you take the freedoms that you still have and you crush them yourselves.

Most of you guys would love so much for the government to imploy Martial Law, take control of your lives, just so you would feel vindicated for all your accusations.  But until the day that all of this happens, you will be alone and bitter, for the government that you so desperatly wish to not work, is still working.

We are free, and I don't think anyone here really, truly believes that we are remotely comparable to the way it is in China or North Korea. That said, to think we are as free as we are lead to believe is rather naive. Take everything with a grain of salt and only believe 1/4 of what you read and 1/2 of what you see...

BTW, here is an example of how we are not quite as free as you may think we are:
http://www.2600.com/rnc2004/

Read that entire article and tell me that the government doesn't bully people, and take away freedoms as they see fit... Yes, the NYPD was the direct "perpetrators," but do you really think they acted without any sort of oustide and higher level infulence?

That's a totally different country and if has nothing to do with the U.S. and they have their own problems.  This is the prolblem we face in this country is that everyone is so concerned with every other country except the one they live in.  Right now we're here and there trying to so called create peace when here at home are people are suffering right in front of our faces and if you stand up and say something your always accused of being unpatriotic to your country if your opinion is not "proper thinking".

What I should'nt complain because someone else is getting fucked a little harder than me?  Either way we all are getting fucked, so the day I get my check (after busting my ass for twelve hours in the hot sun) with a big stamp on it that reads "Tax Free" then I will say I am free. Until then I am a slave of this nation we call the USA.
