normally bike shops recommend getting a lock about 1/10th the price of your bike

so for a 800 dollars bike, a 80 dollar lock is recommended... now 80 seems like a lot, but if you have to rely on it, it is good insurance to pay

i've seen too many people losing their precise bmx's and it takes bastard time and money to set up a desirable new setup, not to mention the frustration of being bike less...

ALWAYS go for a D-shaped lock, none of those chain ones with plastics wrapped round the outside. Get a branded one with a 15minute rating (that's supposed how long it's needed for certain tools to break it), and learn lock your bike to things that ARE immovable... you lock it to a shitty fence with a good lock, and people can just cut the fence.

more importantly though, you should never leave your bike, no matter how properly locked up it is, at a place for a prolonged time... it's a bit silly riding it to school and locking it there for 5+ hours on most days... if people eye up your bike, they KNOW where to go to try to steal it.

leaving it indoors, under monitor, is the best option really

Don't put your bike in a situation in which it could be stolen and it wont be stolen. Don't ride in shitty areas.. Don't leave your bike out of your site or walk away from it within easy running range.... If you must leave it out of your site, have some one watch it while your gone. Don't leave it in your car unattended, take it home when your done riding. Keep it in your house in a very hard to remove/pain in the ass to get to place(like in a basement or up a flight of stairs). Find a good place on the bike to hide a piece of paper with your name on it, that way you can prove its yours if you need to(like in the seat post or the handle bar).

my town has a graduating class of 30 seniors. i watch my bike like a hawk even for the town being so small, when i go to the local market for a cold one...i bring it just inside the door and turn it upside down, my bike never leaves my sight...i get what i need and thats it.

when i ride to the next town over thats bigger than mine i bring my lock when i need to get something at the store i first turn my bike upside down and lock it to something very secure...

i guess turning it upside down adds time to the thief having to turn it back around and enough time for me to nail his ass...

Alright, I live in NYC and my bike shop deals with people who get bikes stolen everyday because their idiots who think they can use a cable to lock up their bike and leave it overnight.

If your locking up an $800 bike, you want a Kryptonite Fugeddaboudit chain and lock. They run about $90 at most stores, and come with a protection plan. You want to lock up BOTH wheels.

But personally, I wouldnt leave the bike locked up anywhere. Period. I can take the L.I.R.R. or Metro North trains to any town outside of NYC, and will find atleast one bike at each train station locked up with ONLY a cable. I can clip through it in about 5 seconds, and hop on the train back to the city.

I never leave my bike anywhere i cant see it. unless a friend is with it. If i lock it somewhere im brickin it untill i see it again.

Me and my friend were riding in our normal car park one time, when these two gypsies tried to take our bikes....... while we were on them. one of them started punching my friend. he was like 'I'm not leaving here without your bike' then he offered £5 for us to fight him. (we were about 13-14 they looked about 19)

Its made me never wanna ride down there again. I couldnt care less if they beat me up but the thought of loosing my bike to people like that makes me cringe. And this is the UK so any means of self defence is out of the question
