Re: 36 hub lace to 48 rim posted on 2006-09-01 09:34:41

I wouldn't recommend it.  At best the spoke pattern would be all screwy and the maintenance from it might eventually make you crazy.  Is that the only rim you have available?

Re: whats was your first flat trick learned posted on 2006-09-01 09:33:25

10 years old -1987 - learned  - footjam endos (the kids in my neighborhood called it a "miami footstop?" never heard it called that anywhere else ever again.) on my Huffy Pro Thunder w/ no front brake.
on my cheapo "Freedom 2" Western Auto freestyle bike that fall I learned curb endos, back wheel hops, sliders, and lawnmowers.  The next year I got a real freestyle bike, a Dyno, and learned fire hydrants, boomerangs, hang 5's, single and double tailwhips, and steamrollers.  I didn't get decades until 1990, backward hikers in 1991, dump trucks and double decades in '92 and forward hikers in 1993.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think that one of the next trends in flatland will be longer top tubes.

I'm so glad I don't have to keep this a secret anymore.... : )

Remember, the original Big Daddy was a bike that was good for almost ALL types of riding......

You should come into Philly and ride some with Brett and me.  Sounds like you need a distraction.
If it makes you feel any better I have DEFINITELY been through exactly what you are going through (some of you on here know the girl and the entire situation) , and I just lost my job so I am also mostly income-free.  Yes, you probably are depressed. Your entire system is in shock right now and its going to take some time until things start to feel normal.  The most important things are to:  Get enough sleep, but not more than about 9 hours a day.  Get exercise every day.  The more intense, the better.  Aerobic exercise can alieviate depression in some people just as well as drugs can.  Start to focus on the future, make some new goals, new plans.  Try to have fun riding your bike, even if you feel like you're just going through the motions right now.  Things will get better. PM me and let me know, man.

There is a brand new Powell frame at a shop in Athens that you could probably name your price for if you wanted it.  It's been sitting in the back of the shop since 1999 at least...

Re: SELL me a FREECOASTER!!! posted on 2006-08-03 07:13:25

I know someone who has a Ody 10T freecoaster laced up to a Primo Balance rim.  I could ask him about it, I'm sure he'd give you a great price on it.  Interested?

I think Jfos got about 15 years worth of message posting in from about 2000-2004....He would be around 2000 messages and I'd have like 150.  He ran out of things to talk about here.  Still rides though, I'm hoping we get to hang out when I visit ATL next week.

who will probably win:

Vert:  Bestwick
Park: Mirra
Dirt: Nyquist or Guenther
Vert Best Trick:  McElhinney (front flip flair) or something crazy Bestwick's been planning
Big Air:  Kagy

it would be cool if they won

Good time was had by all.  Weather was good, spot was good, it was cool to be in NY riding, it was good to see everyone again, I'm starting to feel comfortable on my new FBM frame, I was riding okay ....my only regret is that Brett beat me in the double decade challenge.... : )

Thanks for putting it together, Joe.  I'm down to go to the next one if I'm in the area.

Re: brakes....no brakes???? posted on 2006-07-20 14:21:25

It really just depends on the rider.  Mike S. and Chase and others have gotten rid of the brakes and had great progress since then.  Its hard to recognize that they don't have brakes on.  On the other hand, some guys take their brakes off and all it does is eliminate about 2/3  of the tricks they can do.  It's not for everyone.  I've played with it before but it's not really for me.

Why the switch?  Tired of the WTP, TJ?  Stephan C. might have one around somewhere...

A very scary tendency I've seen in U.S. BMX magazines are the Army and Marine recruitment ads... It says alot about the readership base in the States.  Then again, if you can get your funding from the government... Why not?
[/quote]

Yeah, that bothers me too, but it doens't suprise me at all.  The Marines used to sponsor ESPN contests a few years back.  I guess they think that "adrenaline" sports might have an influx of unfocused risk addicted teens that would make great solidiers.  : (

Re: Potty Mouth Flatlanders posted on 2006-07-18 12:28:48

That whole thing just cracks me up.  Fifteen years ago most of those people there would've probably cursed like a sailor, but now that they're married, have kids, own a house, have turned Republican, and just returned to riding after being absent since 1988, they decide to get self righteous about who can say what on the boards.

True, whoever owns the thing can techincally enforce any rules that they want, but it reminds me of back in the early 90's, when GT and the ABA engineered the end of GO because they didn't like the "street" image and thought that Lew and Co. were spending too much editorial time talking up S&M.  Or when Plus decided that they wouldn't run ANY pictures of riders unless they were wearing helmets.  Or when GT and the ABA banned Chris Moeller from wearing a shirt that said "Todd Huffman (GT employee) Sucks" during a televised race.  Or when magazines were going to refuse to advertise the S&M Holmes (even though all the controversy did was alert the average clueless 12 year old - me - to the fact that the Holmes was named after a porn star) or the Heavy as Fuck.

Glenn, I remember Ellie trying to keep all of us in line at the NBL comps back in the day.  I was nearly DQ'ed once for not having a strap on my helmet - in a flatland run!  Ellie was nice to run those contests, but once Hoffman started his, I realized just how ridiculous they really were.  Full pads, helmets in a flatland run....rules rules rules.  NBL contests were fun at the time, but looking back on them they kind of sucked.  The NBL was just about as out of it as they could be.

I like Vbmx, but a lot of those guys are WAY too into the squeaky clean image of freestyle and BMX that was promoted in magazines like Plus in the 80's.  (but never really existed in the first place) Most of those guys weren't really plugged into the scene, (I would imagine that many of them never entered a national contest or anything - judging by their hero worship of guys like Fred Blood), they were into bikes but dropped them really early in favor of cars and growing up when the rest of us were just learning hitchhikers and deathtrucks.  Now they're back "into" bikes, but only to polish NOS Haros with a diaper and compare who has the best powdercoating jobs on ridiculous 80's bikes that were shitty even when they were released 20 years ago.

Speaking of Fred, there was talk about him a on vbmx a few months ago, and someone said we can't say anything bad about him because he might be on there.  Even though everyone (Fred included) knows that Fred Blood managed to engineer a great little living out of knowing maybe 6 tricks that the average 13 year old could learn in a 1/2 hour.

Now saying shit is a bannable offense?  Who the hell is on that board that might be impressionable?  They say there are kids on there, but I've never seen them.  A kid would either be talking shit on somebody's seat being too high on a pic they posted on bikeguide, or they'd be downloading pictures of some chick sucking off John Holmes on limewire.  At Vbmx there's only paunchy old men talking about the good old days back when pro riders had names like Racoon Lips and the Chairman, and not putting your foot down 20 times in 5 minutes while pulling a barstand, ninja stand, cherrypicker and a quickspin won you 60K and the AFA Masters title.
