can i make a free agent maverick into a flat-land bike? posted on 2005-01-05 16:30:11
No matter what you run, PUMP UP YOUR TIRES TO AT LEAST 105-110 psi. Low tire pressure is the #1 reason why beginners have so much trouble with flatland. I can't do many tricks on a bike with 50 psi in the tires, and you can't either. Pump those tires up and keep them inflated hard. And while your at it, make sure you lube the brake cables with WD-40 or something, or your brakes won't work, whether you have a Revenge brake or a Cheng Shen caliper brake.

I would recommend 4 pegs, front and back brakes, and a detangler. Depending on what tricks you do you might not even need all that, but its a good starter package. That and determination is all you really need.
Chase´s 1.75 tires posted on 2005-01-05 11:53:57
I haven't run 1.75's in YEARS. I'm thinking about putting them back on again to see, though. I loved RL tires but haven't had a pair on my bike since 1995 or so. I switched to 1.95's, then to 1.85's, I still think that you are a lot more stable if you have a wider tire, but of course you give up some of your spinning speed/ability. Everything feels faster on a 1.75, they're fun.
Kent probably disagrees with me though. That guy would run monster truck tires on his bike if he could....

PS. I do love the '87 Haro Master though and am continually sorry that I sold mine back in 1994.

We probably shouldn't forget that Vision also brought us the hip sack, a piece of gear that went from useful to cool to ridiculous in around 5 months, as the idea was almost immediately hijacked by the mainstream and is now only found on pudgy middle aged women at Disneyworld.

Not trying to attack you man, but I think that VSW is just trying to capitalize on nostalgia from guys like me that wore the shoes in the 6th grade. I can't believe they still make that suede high top. Those shoes were terrible even for back then. I remember them literally disentegrating within months of getting them. They had no padding at all, there was like 1/8' of rubber between your foot and the floor, and they came unstitched in all kinds of weird places. Airwalks were 10x better, and compared to shoes today, those suck.

I wonder if we will ever see a BACO DVD boxset? Granted, I've only seen 3-10, but it would be cool. My copies of 6-8 are just about worn out.

Baco is/was Chris Rye/Degroot/Freimuth/Mark Hilson, and maybe a couple of other guys orginating from WI somewhere. They obviously made a bunch of vids and some shirts for the past 14 years or so. Rye got together with Marco to make Props in '94, but new Baco vids come out every now and then, even though I think they peaked around Baco 6 or 7 or so (not much flatland these days)
