I don't fully agree.  Not all art professors are like that.  A lot of them want you to succeed.  I've had some professors even hook me up with jobs.  As far as an education in art, I feel that you should only venture into it if you are for sure that it is what you want to do for a living.  Don't commit yourself to it, if it's just a hobby.  Art is something you are going to have to have a lot of determination and drive for.   Art schools are a big commitment because they tend to be very expensive, and can leave you in a lot of debt.  It is true that a lot of artists and designers have made it in the business without going through school, but that's not to say that they didnt get an education.  A lot of them learned through working for other artists, or having family or friends who could teach them.  If you don't have that, maybe an art school is worth it.
I graduated from an art school, and I don't think I would be the same artist I am today, if I had not gone.  Some of the things I learned there, I wouldn't have had access to if I had not gone.  I wouldn't have been surrounded by such a good community of artists to work with and learn from.  I'm 25 now, and I am a senior illustrator for a major fashion company.  Sometimes I think about if I would have been able to make it to where I am today, without going to school.  The truth is, I don't think i would.

Don't get me wrong. Getting to where I am today was not easy at all.  I went through a couple of years freelancing and trying to find work.  There were times where I was really low on dough and living off a credit card, getting myself deeper into debt.  But it was something I really wanted to do, something I really had a passion for.  If you are interested in pursuing a career in art, expect to struggle.  Art is not where the money is at.

Just letting you know that Art is not a Dead end.

Hey well I was a bit moody when I wrote that,. The thing is, I went to school for art and the teachers gave me nothing but a hard time, they were underqualified and couldn't teach art worth shit (it was a crappy school so this is partially to blame).

Then I tried to get into music which required me to take a one year general course because the program was oversubscribed, I worked my ass off and put up with a lot of shit and got good grades, only to be put on a waiting list, denied, then told to apply in another year and maybe I would get in then.

Now I am stuck in my hometown (the last place I wanted to be) at community college, taking business, with a bunch of shitty courses like math and accounting and human resources, sure its stable but every class I'm in I just wish I was with creative students and not all these boring business students.

Hey you said you were 15 ? Well I'm 20 and I still have no fucking clue what I want to do

Basically I just want easy access to money

I went to school for art and that was an awful decision,. Art teachers do not want their students to suceed because they are still struggling artists (which is why they teach art and arent selling their paintings for big money)

THEN I tried a general arts and science course, . it was fun I met some cool people, but it didnt get me anywhere career wise.

NOW I am in business administration,

If you take any advice from me,. let it be this

DO NOT take any college courses that woudl be more of a personal hobbie of yours if you werent in college... like

music, art, fashion,

because the truth is you do not need degrees to get into this job market and the most amazing artists did not go to school for graphic design, and the most amazing and influential musicians did not goto school for instrumentation, and the owners of the top fashion chains did not major in fashion.

All the creative courses in college are dead ends.

Take something practical and realistic.

Even if its a back-up plan in case you dont become a rock star.
