jeeze.  what's good.   i read on the gsport site about em.  seems like you'd want something really easy to pedal with.  i'm not looking for whats good, but moreso for why

well i run 25/11. its pretty good, imight try to get a 9 on the back just so its easier to pedal places. an easy to pedal gear is 'short' and hard to pedal is 'long'

depending on your frame you migh tnot be able to run higher than a certain amount on the front. but if you still do street or you you use your bike to get around and stuff. i think 27/9 is the biggest id run. sometimes for certain tricks its easier to pedal and ride a way from a stop with a 'short' ratio so you dont want to have the gear be too too long

for flat...if you can afford a 9t hub id say go fo it. then just get a 25 or at the MOST 30 if you have a street frame  and still ride street or something

its also about clearace too though. some people ill deal with the gear being too small because itll give you more space for upsidown tricks

feel free to ask more questions

thanks sailor, that helped a lot.  i mean, i've been riding flat for just about three years.. but could never settle on 'what's good'.  and knowing the terms and what will do what helps out.  i has a 27/9 and my knee really started hurting after a while.  i got an 11 in the back now and it made a big difference on the pedalling.  money-wise i don't have much, so experimenting won't be happening too soon as far as finding a preference.  so i guess i'll go with the 27/11 and focus on learning new tricks and actually riding.  it's a lot nicer on the knees, quite a small frame i got tho

what are you riding by the way, other than the 25/11?

I don't ride flatland, but I use 28/13.
For me, it works well with street, park, and trails.
As well as getting places.

i pretty much just ride the 25/11, i have a 13t cog for the nankai layin around but not too usefull since i want to go smaller

oh yea another thing that i forgot to add was how to 'judge' ratios. pretty much you just divide the front sproket by the rear cog

so if you have a 35/14 your ratio is 2.5 as you can probably guess that just means that for every one turn of the cranks the backwheel ill turn 2.5 times.

so if you want to compare you jsut compare those numbers

35/14=2.5
25/11=2.27

pretty much the bigger the number the 'longer' your gear is. if you have a ratio you like you can figure out what combination of gears ill give you that same ratio with a little algebra

lets say you like 2.5 and have 35/14

you can solve for x in "25/x=2.5" and you get x=10

you always have to guess at one of the gears, you want to try couple different combinations but using # of teeth from sprokets you can actually buy, till you come up with #'s you can actually buy. i like to guess at the sproket

only thing to keep in mind is that the smaller the gears the more stress the chain ill have since therse less teeth the chain has to spead the torque of your pedaling. so you have a 'weaker' drivetrain. not too important if your riding flat. even street...not really that big of a deal if you have a good chain and keep it in mind

there used to be a really good gear ratio thread on here...havent seen it for a while

that was the most informative reply ever, not to count anyone else's out.  but thanks for the math.  that stuff's amazing.  hm... the going smaller/making the drivetrain weaker thing is kind of bothersome...  but right, as long as i'm not getting a lot of pedalling mileage, i guess i would then be okay.  and my expensive bike is merely just for entertainment.  kind of sad.

i've been rethinking a lot of what i've put money into, and there's so much goods to get/want.

jeeze, also, those bikevarialstubbleducks that raphiel chiquet does must burn his leg.  i think

that all flatlanders have one leg bigger than the other.  and being that this is a sport of balance (totally going off topic here) if your body isn't balanced... seems contradicting.  so i got another road bike.  and i want to build up my body evenly (riding and not riding).

jeeze.

major thanks for the info though.

I once rocked a 30/20 gear ratio on a cheap bike I threw together. It was lots of fun going no where fast.

i look forward to using an 18/9.  i have used a 24/12 and seems like 2 to 1 is pretty good, just got to pedal like hell to keep a high speed up if you really want to go somewhere, good for cruising and a short or light enough gear for flat.  i've got to go back to this gearing...
