The extra processing power the ps3 has, can be used for a lot of things... in game physics for example... or AI...
Graphics most certainly don't make the game... I too still love original nes games more than any other games...
History has shown that the most powerfull system, doesn't always mean it has the best games... the sega cd, 32x, turbo graffix 16, and neogeo are all fine examples... You can make the fastest car in the world, but if no one makes fuel for it.. it's really not any good...
I've read some interesting speculation about the ps3 pre-sales from some wallstreet analysts... some people think the only pre-sales the system is getting are people who think they can price jack it on ebay come christmas time... and if the people that want to buy and play it aren't there... your going to end up selling it at a loss cause people will just be able to get them at the store if the that is true... some people think that the ps3 isn't a 100% for sure investment this time around... I've asked at a lot of places, and no one seems to be jumping out to get one.. just the people that want to sell it come christmas...
so... buyer-beware....
You can spark it up, but im'a put you out!

D. who in ther rite mind would pay $600 for a gaming system?

I would.  The $600 price tag for PS3 is a steal for what you are getting.  blue ray players alone are like $1000.  sony and microsoft don't really make profit on the gaming systems, but make all the money from the games.  i read before in Forbes magazine that microsoft has never made a profit from the xbox systems.

Doubt it.  At worst all you can do is break even and it is really no big deal then.  Even if I had to sell it for a loss, I would just opt out to keep it for myself because I eventually want one.  So in the end if you preorder it and hope to sell it, you really can't lose.

It's true enough that it is a "steal" for a Blu-Ray player, but there are a few things to take into account. First, a Blu-Ray player means absolutely nothing if you don't have a HDTV, which not everyone does. Second, nobody knows if Blu-Ray is going to last. For all we know, Blu-Ray could be the next Beta or Mini-Disk player. Lastly, we don't know how good of a quality the Blu-Ray player will really be. The DVD playback in the PS2 was crap compared to standalone DVD players, and it could stand to be the same for the PS3 and Blu-Ray.

I don't hate the PS3, and I fully intend to get one.... in the very distand future when it is actually affordable. For now though, since I don't have an HDTV, and I don't like the fact that Blu-Ray is brand spanking new technology to most of the public with an uncertain future, I will have to pass on the PS3. I mean, only time will tell which will become the new standard, be it Blu-Ray or HDDVD. Just like VHS beat out beta, and DVD has more or less totally phased out VHS, only one will win... most likely.

Lastly, regardless of how affordable a Blu-Ray player it is, 600 dollars is still expensive to most people. Not to mention the fact that games are supposed to be sold at 70-100 dollars each, the price just escalates.

$600 for the system (imo, the $500 system isn't even worth looking at)
$140 for games (assuming you buy 2 with the system, which is a pretty common number)
$50-60 for an extra controller
Throw in a couple Blu-Ray movies at almost $30 a piece.
Add in tax and your at damn near $1000 dollars.

Not exactly a drop in the bucket by my standards...

the Wii will do great because of both price and the fact that you DO NOT need an HDTV for it. I dont own a HDTV yet and that why I still havent bought an XBOX360. It will be the same withthe PS3. When I do buy a HDTV, I will buy those other two consoles.
