Hardcore music isn't completely defined by subject matter.  Its really hard to classify anything anyone makes anymore because it is all so diverse and under multiple genres.  Bands change as well, what they once sang and what they now sing, what do we classify a band as.  What if they were Hardcore for 8 years and more of an Punk/Emo for the last 2.  What is the band than?  If I had to classify music I would break it down simpler than the whole shitload of groups that currently exist.

Emo:    Subject matter tends to be about killing them selves, killing a girl friend, loss of a friend, or anything dark and depressing that has to do with Adolecent and Pubecent themes.  Again, an example would be Fall Out Boy, New Blink 182, new Sum41, etc...
i like emo, but i wouldnt consider the subject matter to be that of killing ones self, or killing a girlfreind or whatever.real emo is  just emotional music...witch, pretty much all music is emotional, but anyway. i dont think bands like fall out boy, and my chemicle romance are emo. im really not sure were they would fall, but its not emo. deathcab, brighteyes, the postal service, is what i call emo, witch are acually very mature bands.

i pretty much agree with everything else, it just bothers me what people consider emo and such.

If you wouldn't classify Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance as Emo, than the next step would be Pop Rock.

I'm not saying all Emo is about killing yourself or your girlfriend, but 95% of it is.

The traditional Emo that everyone loves to hate all seems to deal with a very pubescent look out on life, which tends to be Love related.
Most of it like I said does deal with the darker side of love.  But that doesn't completely describe emo, like I said its also the singing style and the way the band plays.
An example of a band that makes Emoish songs but isn't classified as Emo, although lots of Emo and Goth kids love them, would be H.I.M
Although the themes in HIM songs are more mature than traditional Taking Back Sunday or Hawthorne Heights stuff.

I've never listened to DeathCab or Postal or Brighteyes, so I'm not going to comment on them or try.

yea i think race fit described hardcore music best, i was thinking about the traditional hardcore that he described,
i will say that 99% of the hardcore bands that i listen to are from N.Y. and i consider that to be the east coast, yet they would be described as what you call "traditional hardcore".
So i'd say what you described as east coast hardcore is more almost a metalcore type of music, but like you said the boundries of music are almost no-existent nowaday's so its almost to hard to classify what a certain genre should sound like.

"Metalcore is a musical genre consisting of a mix between heavy metal and hardcore punk."-Wikipedia

i searched hardcore in wikipedia, and this is what i found:
In music, hardcore may be used to refer to:

-Hardcore punk, a more intense version of punk rock
-Hardcore Emo, a style of music that existed primarily in the early-mid 90s, also known as Chaotic Emo
-Christian hardcore, a form of hardcore punk music featuring evangelical Christian lyrics and themes
-Melodic hardcore, a more melodic, less furious version of hardcore punk
-Post-hardcore, a musical offshoot of hardcore punk
-Hardcore dancing, a form of mosh dancing or slam dancing
-Hardcore techno, a subgenre of electronic dance music closely related to Gabber
-Happy hardcore, a form of dance music typified by a very fast tempo, female vocals, and saccharine lyrics
-UK hardcore, a genre found at the start of the 21st century in the United Kingdom
-Breakbeat hardcore, which shares its rhythm lines with breakbeat
-Digital hardcore, a gritty genre first defined by Alec Empire in the early 1990s
-Hardcore hip hop, a subgenre of hip hop characterized by confrontational lyrics and gritty beats

I would agree that Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, ect. would be like what MTV tries to pass as punk/rock, and are not emo becaus so many punk bands are like fuck the mainstream and don't wanna be played on mtv, deathcab is a very pop version of fall out boy, like with electronica sounds in it, very mtv.

i think this is sad. they didnt used to be mainstream. and im not gonna let the fact that they are, ruin my liking them. but people need to be themselves and listen to what has what they like, not whats cool, witch is waht makes music mainstream imo.

When I mean East Coast Hardcore, I mean it as a genre as I believe you understand.  Granted a band can be from the eastcoast and just be Hardcore in my eyes, but East Coast Hardcore is a more mature punk/hardcore hybrid.
