Over the autumn '05 i was living in Raleigh, NC.
I had the pleasure of living with Gil Whitten.
Cool guy.
Anyway he is currently the one responsible for the
way the the 401 trails look.
I'm not sure if you guys know 401, but i was honored
to ride there, as it was one of Chris Doyle's
frequented spots as he was becoming the god he is
today.
Gil is a scientist with the dirt, too. He's got it
down. The right mixture of brown clay / brown dirt,
then cap it off with red clay to make a rock hard
surface.
I grew up in the north east, and there isnt' much
clay up there. It was interesting to learn a new
system of trail packing.
Long live 401 !!

Yea I know them, too bad Doyle's trails in Pittsburgh got plowed, but Buck's in Erie is pretty killer. We have some amazing clay around here, that's what our's are made of.

Well let me know when, we have some pretty killer trails nearby, ours, Minersville, and State College trails. We have a barn full of ramps too that's pretty fun.

Me and a friend went out to 401 last week. It was to dark to ride but we could still make out that The trails are sweet. I have never ridden trails before. I can't wait to go back and give them a try. I hope I can meet some of the guys when I go back. The last house on the right had a big dog that didn't like us walking to the woods. LMAO.

Hah yes i remember that dog.
Golden retriever, if i remember correctly.
He's all bark though, no worries :P
Oh man, when you get a chance, ride 401 when it's light out. it's a treat to ride. I really love the wallride and the transfer through the dig pit into the wooden quarter.
Gil is a fuggin scientist tho ( Literally, to be honest, he's a biologist ) with that place, he's got some gnar gnar wallride in the dig pit he's working on.
Too bad i'm not there anymore.
Cool that you got to see 401... you live in the area?
Campus is real fun, lots of guys ride there.
Anyways take it easy.

Yeah I live about 40 45 minutes from there in Smithfield NC. I have never ridden trails before and was blown away at how nice they looked. I want to meet people in the area who ride. Its just a friend and myself now.

When is the best time to try and catch everyone there?
I know to take off my pegs before I go. Is there anything else I need to know? Are the locals over protective and secretive?
So if I get a chance to meet Gil do you want to send a message or anything?

Im mapping out my entire trip with google Earth so when the time comes Ill ask you for directions\tell you the exact day we will try and be there haha.
Its mostly a random trip so it might be hard to meet up for the barn ramp session haha. Sounds fun though so i hope it works out
