| i have a 2005 haro backtrail x1. i was thinking that at some point (but not for a while) i would want to convert my 44 tooth sprocket into a 39 tooth sprocket. i was wondering if this is possible on my bike. if it helps i run a 44-16 sprocket.
also if i did what else, if any, would i need to replace other than the chainwheel itself. thanks

| a proper gear ratio would be 39/14. that would be the equivilant to a 44/16 as far as torque goes.
its easy to figure out, just divide your sprocket teeth by your freewheel teeth, and if it equals to somewhere around 2.75, you have a proper gear ratio. ![]()

| to be honest..i wouldnt really get to worked up about what the "proper" ratios are if it feels good to you..i was running 36-16 for the longest time and i loved it..now im at 39 -16 and its still good | |

| i want a gear ratio that has good acceleration. i need greater acceleration because i find i can never get my self going fast enough when i'm at a dead stop (when i do stair jumping) | |

| there are a lot of benefits in having a proper gear ratio. your speed isnt compromised, and you always have adiquite tension in your pedals when you need to put more preasure on them in order to do certian tricks. like rolling out 180s or landing grinds off of big ledges.
i just got away from 36/16. it was terrible. i whacked my knees a lot doing 180's because my legs would buckle and get sketchy underneath me. i'm running a 32/12 gear ratio now and its excellent. if you want an easier gear, i'd suggest something just a bit easier, not something as loose as 36/16....thats a mountain bike gear. if you live in the hills of san francisco i can see the application, but then again, you probably wouldnt be riding a bmx bike. ![]()

| 39-14
similar to 44-16 unless u want more acceleration less top speed then put on 39-16 or 44-18

| 39/16 isnt bad, its easier to pedal through grass and up hills, but you wont get 100% speed as someone with 44/16 youll get about 95% of the speed.
its not bad, but dont expect to get somewhere faster ![]()
